    More Info

Just to follow up, I haven't had the opportunity to download IE 5.01 yet, not being able to tie up our phone line for over 6 hours -yes I still have dial-up!! I have been trying to get a copy on cd, or somebody to download and burn a copy for me.
In the meantime, last night I decided to reload a copy of IE 3.02, which was originally loaded on my computer. The installation went fine, I just did a minimal install, hoping to correct a couple of problems that IEradicator had caused. This was fairly successful, but the IE program itself is again inoperable, as before. When I try to open IE all I get is a transparent window with just a frame and tool bar - the desktop shows through the rest of the window. The dial-up window does not appear for connection to the Internet - that's all I get - no error message - IE just stops opening up.
Food for thought!!! Any comments, ideas. OS problem??
Anyway, I am still going to install IE 5.01, hoping it will be successful since not so tied into the OS - Windows 95b.

So it makes no difference how you open IE3.02, from a shortcut or from opening iexplore.exe directly?

Also, no difference if you FIRST connect to the internet using your ISP software, if required, or from My Computer Dial-up-networking folder, connection icon for your iSP, THEN open IE?

In any case, good luck with IE5.01sp2 download only.

Along those lines I noticed that the link I gave, http://windows.about.com/library/bl_iedownload_a.htm says this, which you would only be able to do from Internet Explorer:
Using Netscape "Run this program from it's current location" is not an option so you MUST save the Ie5setup.exe to your hard drive, then close Netscape and any other running programs, particularly antivirus scanners. STAY CONNECTED to your ISP (or reconnect after closing Netscape) and then open the file. Also, in Step 5 in the instructions- http://windows.about.com/library/bl_iedownload_f.htm
if you downloaded the initial ie5setup.exe to C:\Download then I would make sure that the setup files go to the same folder or subfolder of C:\Download if it is not already showing on Download Options screen.

I'm afraid, though that you might run into the same problems downloading as you did before, which is why I first suggested the FULL ie5.01sp1 download from the Univ of Victoria site, big as it is.

Hopefully a friend will be able to download and copy to CD-Rom the full install file from the Univ. of Victoria.

On the IE transparent window problem, this may be the source of all your problems! Forget the above for now and check the following. You may simply have an incorrect file version of Wininet.dll

    IE 3.01 Problem

Alice, I hope you have something here!! I searched my hard drive for the wininet.dll file, and got three locations. One is in the windows/system folder, where you say it should be, but it is not the version your last posting shows it should be - it is version 5.00.2014.213. The other locations are windows/temp - version 4.70.1300, and in program files/disney/disneyonline/system/occache - version 4.70.1300. Both of these are the correct version.
O.K., so what do I do? How do I change the version of the one I need, and do I need to delete the other two, as your posting suggested? Regarding the Disney folder, I can totally uninstall that program - I was going to anyway.
Thanks for your persistence Alice! I will await your response before trying what I think needs to be done.
If after we try this, doesn't work, I'll try the last part of your posting, about renaming some files.

I hope that this can be done in Windows... otherwise you will need to use MS-Dos. First close everything except Explorer and Systray using Ctrl/Alt/Delete. Then try this:

Right-click on the Wininet.dll file icon in Windows\system and rename it to Wininet.OLD - you can do that right from the Find window. (*see below)

Now open My Computer, C-Drive, Windows, Temp

Highlight the Wininet.dll file, click Edit, Copy. Close the Temp Folder.

Now go to the Windows System folder. Click Edit, Paste.

I don't think it's necessary to then delete the other Wininet.dll files that are in the other folders (Temp and disney) but you can rename them to Wininet.BAK (for backup) to be safe.

    * NOTE:
If you can't rename the Windows\System copy of Wininet.dll while in Windows, here is how to do it in MS-Dos:
    ==============copy/paste==========

Rename (right click and rename) the replacement wininet.dll to
wininet.new and place it in the Windows/System folder. Restart the
    computer in msdos.

    At the Windows prompt, Type:
    CD System
    and hit enter.

    At the system prompt, Type:
    ren wininet.dll wininet.old
    and hit enter.

    Type:
    ren wininet.new wininet.dll
    and hit enter.

Reboot the machine. The wininet.old file can now be removed.

    =======end copy/paste==========

In your case, the "replacement" will be the one in Windows\Temp - you would rename that to wininet.NEW and place it in the Windows/System folder. while in Windows. That gets you ready to do the dos rename.

When you type commands in MS-Dos, spacing is very important! for example, CD_System
    ren_wininet.dll_wininet.old
    ren_wininet.new_wininet.dll

    (the _ represents a space)

After you have finished your dos commands, type EXIT at the > prompt
and then press ENTER to restart Windows. That works when you boot to dos using Start Shutdown, Restart in MS-Dos mode. Otherwise, if you used the F8 Command Prompt Only method of booting into MS-Dos, you would use Ctrl/Alt/Delete to reboot the machine to Windows.

    Hi Alice,

I was able to do the renaming and copy / paste from within Windows, but it did not work - IE 3.02 still opens to an unoperable transparent window. It's getting late, but if I don't have my IE 5.01 copy tomorrow, I will try the second part of your previous post, regarding the renaming of some files.

    Thanks for now,

    Steve.

    Success

    It worked!!!

I finally managed to get a copy of IE 5.01 on cd, and it installed successfully, as hoped. In the process, it hopefully restored the possibly corrupted file(s) within my OS, as some of you suspected. IE works fine, and the process of dialing onto the Internet is smoother, as the installation restored some of the missing features for the dial-up networking program.
Anyway, I have now, as a result, been able to install the software for my new cd burner, which was the goal of this whole exercise. Hopefully, all the other software I have been putting aside, which also has IE requirements, will now install.
Thanks to all, especially markp62 and Alice, who have been helpful, patient and diligent through this process - you know your stuff, or where to find it.
If I may be so bold though, one more question - does any one know how to get the window to show up again, automatically, after closing the Internet browser, whether it be IE or NS, that asks if I want to disconnect now? Remember - still using dial up connection! It popped up after using, and then closing IE 5.01 the first time after installation, but not since. I used to have this feature, but it disappeared a long time ago, probably when IE 3.02 stopped working. Since then I have had to double click on the dial-up networking icon in the bottom right corner of the task bar, and then press disconnect when the window pops up. Sometimes the kids forget to do this, and we stay connected to the Internet. I've checked everywhere for this option.

    Thanks again,

    Steve.

Glad to hear all is well now.
Go into Internet Options, then click on the Connections tab. Highlight your connection, then click on the Settings button. Another window will open up, click on the Advanced button. You should now have a little window open with what you are looking for. I believe the ones you want checked is the Disconnect if idle for [ ] minutes and the Disconnect when connection is no longer needed.

    Hey, that's great news, Steve!

So happy to hear you were able to get a copy of IE5.01 on CD-rom and install it.

Good luck with your new CD burner too!
