I have posted this before and it got transferred to virus section but I thought an update might be appropriate as it seems it is too tough to handle.

On boot IE will function OK for a few minutes then resorts to trying to trackdown sites by number rather than name..but no luck..can't find them.

Regardless of it being IE6, IE7 or Firefox it malfunctions with them all.

I have done an XP repair but still the problem exists..........there's gotta be an answer out there somewhere short of having to reinstall XP.

    Havagreat day

    Thanks for your interest Steve.

At the beginning (after a reboot) when I go to logon to a site the function is normal.....ie: the Name of the site is searched, found and opened.

After a short period of time maybe 5 minutes or so all searches are then automatically made by the site number and fail to open.

Once this happens I have to reboot to access the web which only last for about 5 minutes each time.

OE functions OK so that would eliminate a modem problem I would reckon, especially as I am running a laptop off the same modem with no problems.

I assume, address changes to numeric address...
    Instead of
    Code:
    http://www.google.com
    , he gets
    Code:
    http://74.125.19.103

Navigate to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC, and you'll see hosts file in right pane. Open it with Notepad, and post it back here.

If it was just that easy I would have done so.

I have copied it to a USB stick but am unable to paste it here.

To be absolutely clear here ....
Right click on the Hosts file and select Open and in the Open With dialogue select Notepad or any other text editor.

Sorry, not as simple as you put it.
There are 311 items in the drivers folder and yes I know it wouldn't matter if there was 11 or 311 the applying principle you speak of should work.

When I "select all" then "copy" they wont "paste" into notepad or any other word document I have on this laptop like Corel8.

I find no provision in the right click options that you speak of.

It lists open, explore, search, nothing about options to open with.

You're looking for ONE, hosts file in ETC folder, not 311 items in DRIVERS folder.

Highlight and copy the following bolded line.

    notepad %systemroot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Click Start>Run and right click then paste the command in the Run dialog and hit Enter. Highlight and copy the contents of the file that opens, then paste it in a reply here.

Thanks Broni for that reassurance...that the readout is normal, however my problem is not and still exists.

Online for about 5minutes then won't open websites..though OE still functions normally.

Click Start>Run and type cmd then hit enter to open a command window. Copy the following bolded command, then right click and paste it into the command window and hit enter.

    ipconfig /flushdns

It should give a successful message. See if there's any change in behavior.
