I just finished a post in Malware, got help cleaning computer from a virus. I still can't do any Windows updates and am having internet trouble. I had IE 8 but had problems still, so we unistalled it and it is now on IE 7, but is acting the same. I can sign in to email (hotmail and Verizon) but it wont open any mail, page says error in bottom left where it says done usually. Also my Windows Mail program looks like my account into is wiped out, the send/recieve is gray and it hasnt gotten mail since the original problem started. I didnt add the account (POP info, ect.) back in because didnt want to make any changes as requested when we were cleaning Malware. When I log into my bank I can sign in, but it wont go past security questions, meaning a box usually pops up to say public or private computer... that doesnt pop up so I cant get all the way in. I did use another computer amd changed the password and questions for security reasons and it took the change and works fine from any other computer. But on mine I still cant get past that screen. Another problem is on facebook wont go into chat, or write a private message and they both require a pop screen. I don't know if it is a security setting or what. We tested Firefox and it works for email and banks. I would like to keep using IE though. Any ideas what is wrong?

That virus you had probably corrupted some files so I would suggest a repair install of Vista, can't remember if you had a Vista disc. After the first few screens you will get a choice for the type of installation, choose 'Repair'.

If you do a reinstall you will lose everything, software & files. Back up all your important files just to be on the safe side. What I suggested was a Repair install which will not overwrite any of your files or software.

You have to select the prompt to reinstall, later there will be a choice for the type of installation. And I've just learned something, in Vista a repair install is called an upgrade.

Anway, so you are completely clear on the procedure here is a link that gives you all the instructions.

    http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-repair-install-vista.html

And, no you do not do this in safe mode.

I followed your suggestion and the tutorial told me to do a registry scan... I downloaded uniblue and keep getting this error, it wont scan, this just keeps popping up:

    Line: 3383
    Chae: 4
Error: a dynamic link library (DLL) initialization routine failed
    Code: 0
    URL: http://localhost:10435/

uniblue wont close either, I have to do task manager to get it to close.

any idea how to get past this? or should I ship the scan

Sorry, I should have told you to ignore that, it's not part of the tutorial it's an advert, uninstall Uniblue and then follow the instructions to do an upgrade from No1. The only important thing to read first is the notes about SP1 or 2 you need to check the disc matches what is installed on the PC or follow the instruction to make a new disc. To see what SP you have installed right click on MyComputer and click properties.

The repair install is going to replace all the files that you tried to scan.

Does that match the disc? If so you can go ahead with the repair install without further delay. If not you will have to follow the instructions re: the SP.
