    In addition to others found here, a good tweak below.

    This tweak will help web pages load faster, it has no real effect on download speeds, just helps your pc look up websites faster thereby speeding up how fast the page loads and making web-surfing more enjoyable. **Remember to export the key first in case it doesn't work and needs to be set back**.

    Navigate to this registry entry and change the following settings:
    For XP & 2K

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\ServiceProv ider

    For 98, 98SE & ME

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP\Service Provider

    On the right for ALL OS's change these entries: (ALL values are HEXIDECIMAL)

    DnsPriority = 1
    HostsPriority = 1
    LocalPriority = 1
    NetbtPriority = 1

    To change the value right mouse click on the value and select modify and enter the values above once you have done all of them reboot to take effect and see how fast your pages load.
    For 98 & ME they should look like:

    01 00 00 00

    Sorry BillyBob, I realise now I was unclear in my description :eek: (most likely because I don't know the name of the cables!) I am just sitting typing this and feel really stupid as the laptop is connected via an Ethernet cable to the router :eek: Although recently I have been using one or the other not both the problem must just be with my laptop IE as my desktop is fine on the same signal/connection :confused:

    It seems to be fine for the first while I am online and the next thing the icons disappear and red x's appear - I have ceheked the registry key to make sure I have the Western European (Windows) string there and I have. I don't know if it makes any difference that my laptop has a pre-installed OEM XP and at one stage IE was configured by an ISP disc. I configure my own connecton now but I wonder if when an ISP disc is loaded it changes the way IE works :confused:

    I have only just installed Sun Java on my laptop so I don't think this is the case with me as I think I have only noticed it once and after that I cleaned the cache. It is nice when browsing to see everything looking as it should and the next thing is I have to refresh my browser :( I don't think I have any cache left to clean!

    Curiously the problem only seems to be with php and Bulletin board forums as the rest of my browsing is fine :confused:

    After re-reading the MS article I posted a link to, I've been paying attention to the encoding settings under View in IE.

    I set it at "Auto Select" and "Western European (Windows)" and things are fine...until I go to this or any other bulletin board. Then it resets to "Unicode (UTF-8)" and the link buttons (icons) do not display. When I reset it to "Western European (Windows)" the link buttons immediately display. When I click on a link on a bulletin board, it resets back to "Unicode (UTF-8).

    It makes no difference how many times I reset it, it will revert to "Unicode (UTF-8)" on every bulletin board I visit and every link on every bulletin board I click.

    I've checked font settings and language settings and every other setting I can think of in both IE and the OS that might be related to the problem and as far as I can tell, they are all as they should be.

    So, if anybody can figure out how to make IE6 (I'm running XP Home) retain the encoding settings, I'm betting the problem will be solved for several of us.

    Hi Miz I fully agree with you we need to make IE stable at Western European to clear the issue with the icons and red x's - one thing this is a problem for a lot of people and it would be wonderful to find a solution!

    I have just tweaked my DNS/Host etc and have come back online and feel it has made a difference to loading of pages. Tweak for encoding would be great :)

    On the general tab of IE options, click accessibility, then the boxes to ignore font styles and sizes. Uncheck the others. Might help. :confused:

    EDIT- Never mind. Still changes to UTF-8 :(

    Dave are there quality differences in CAT5 cables? I know this will not solve the encoding issues but just wondered if it would be worthwhile finding a different CAT5 cable (not sure what mine is all I know it is blue!)

    Yeah, CAT5 is standardly used and will provide good performance. Solid wire cable is better than stranded but almost never used for the home. CAT5E will provide somewhat faster data flow and recommended for use with routers and use of full-duplex. CAT6 is even faster, almost twice that of 5E, but generally not used because most equipment can't even take advantage of the considerably higher priced CAT6 cable. There is a minimum industry standard for cable, and although I think it would be rare and hard to determine, I suppose one manufacturers cable could be less adequate than anothers.

    I cannot keep the encoding set to Western European. When I come to this site and do a forum jump, invariably the encoding resets itself to utf8. If I refresh at utf8, same problem. If I change encoding to western european, the Icons automatically reappear. :(

    Dave: in those reg tweaks, what should the XP settings look like. I went in there, but did not change anything, as it is too strange and :confused:

    Right click string>modify and type 1

    I seem to remember another thread dealing with the encoding a while back. I'll see if I can dig it up and find anything useful. BTW, changing the encoding after the page loads is comparable to refreshing. It's just reloading the page. :(

    Thanks Dave noted the CAT cables and will have a look at these next time I am shopping! Hopefully the encoding solution can be found :confused: refresh page is actually what we are doing :(

    When you edit the XP reg keys they should all read: 0x0000000(1)

    Before edit you will see:
    DNS 7d0 (2000)
    Host 1f4 (500)
    Local 1f3 (499)
    NetBt 7d1 (2001)

    You bet, miniB! :)

    To all of you experiencing this problem, if I understand correctly, it's an intermittent problem?.? I'm guessing it is, as I have experienced it also. When it happens, check your tracert times. It can be to anywhere, but to here would be best since here is where the problem is. I've done so in the past and the hop times are usually high when it happens. Not necessarily all hop times, but enough. If that's the case with you, there's nothing that can be done about it. It amounts to, usually, traffic on the servers. Sometimes it's packets that have to be re-sent because they got lost or didn't come through fast enough. Check the times again when everything loads properly the first time.

    Right clicked dns, clicked modify, typed in 1, ended up with value:
    0x0000001(1) not 0x0000000(1)

    This OK? have not changed other keys. Too wary! :eek:

    Thanks Dave, I'm going in there and change the rest. :eek:

    Martin

    Edit: Dave, this is not an intermittant problem. It happens on every site I visit and in every forum. If I right click the placeholder, select "show Picture" it just dissappears. I don't get the picture like minib.

    No apparent way to lock the encoding to western european? Even with "auto" deselected, encoding changes to utf8. I did a forum jump to XP just now and got the first 6 icons. After that, only placeholders. encoding reset itself to utf8

    I do not believe, or even think, that this is an encoding problem. It reverts to UTF-8 by default when you change pages. If that were the problem, everyone visiting this forum would have the problem. Try clearing cookies. Check IE Options>TIF Settings>view objects for damaged, corrupt or not installed ActiveX controls. Wouldn't even hurt a thing to delete them all. They will be rebuilt. Check security>custom level. I have mine set to medium, and not only feel safe, don't get stuff I don't want. :)

    I've got at least a half dozen links to red X issues if anyone would like to pursue them. :D

    Dave: I have tried my best to fix it on this machine all to no avail. Have deleted all cookies, all Active X controls, cleared all Caches, all TIFfiles, all other Temp files, and still get the red x on this site as well as others. :confused: My last forum jump loaded some icons, but skipped some, load maybe 7or8, skip one, load 5or6 more skip one etc. I'm sure it is this local machine's problem, but where continues to elude me. Maybe from the latest MSFT update. Never had this problem till last week, but I give up, :( maybe it will fix itself later. :rolleyes:

    P.S. forgot, also ran spy bot, ad aware, pest patrol, AV scan, CWshreder, hijackthis, bzooka scan.
