I noticed problems running Java apps in my browser a while back. For example, this calculator doesn't work for me.

It used to just show a grey box.

Then I followed the instructions elsewhere on this site for removing the Microsoft VM.

Now that calculator just says "Not support Java." No grey box even.

I downloaded the latest Sun Java when I started having these problems. But the version checker on Sun's site still said I had an old version of Java running. Now (after uninstalling the Microsoft VM) the version checker on Sun's site can't detect a Java Runtime Environment at all.

When this problem initially occurred I did play with the settings in the Java Control Panel and Internet Options/Advanced a bit. I don't know if I made any changes that were a problem. The only thing that seems relevant is that "Use JRE 1.5.0_04 for <applet> (requires restart)" is checked in Internet Options/Advanced.

I've got XP SP2 with auto update on. IE 6. And I've installed the latest version of Sun Java.

Just a passing thought, but my own Java was acting up (actually not working) until I remembered that I had tweaked security settings in IE. I went back and hit the default button for those security settings and the Java functioned flawlessly.

Thanks for the suggestion James, but restoring the defaults didn't help.

Greg - based on this issue and the other IE/OE one you mentioned, it really sounds like some stuff needs fixing.

Simple to do, harmless, and very possibly helpful will be the clean-up routine from post #8 in This thread.

I tried those things Newt. Java apps still don't run.

Additional info, though I don't know if it's relevant:
There's a Sun Java Console menu item under the IE tools menu. When I choose it I get a dialog box saying Sun Java isn't the default Java for the browser and that I should go to Internet Options/Advanced to set it. But I've already mentioned the only relevant setting I'm aware of there.

gregfoley--I would uninstall SunJava (all entries for "J2SE RunTime ") from Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs. (Presume that was the way you uninstalled MS Java Virtual Machine. If not post back.) Then download a fresh copy and reinstall
    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
    Reboot.
Now go back to the IE Tools|Internet Options|Advanced window and see if the box "Use JRE..." is unchecked. If so, check it and reboot.
Test for presence of Java on your PC.
    http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
If that indicates all is well, can you now reach those sites?
    If not, go into IE Tools|Internet Options|Security tab|Custom Settings|
Under Scripting, set "Active Scripting" and "Scripting of Java applets" at Enable|OK|Apply|OK.
    Any success at those sites?

Thanks, that worked! I guess I should have thought of that myself: uninstalling and reinstalling is a pretty basic troubleshooting measure.

Actually, when uninstalling Microsoft's VM I used the instructions here.
