Trying to get my friend's Win 7 laptop to connect. It recognizes the wifi and connects with IE. Not with the others. If I try to update MB or CCleaner, etc they don't connect either. I've allowed them in and out in Win Firewall listing, and added them to AVG's exclusions. I even turned off the firewall and av for a min to check.

Is this laptop on a home network? Work network? School network?
Is it a new install of Windows 7?
Can you open a command window and do this?
    Code:
    ping www.yahoo.com
    Please give more details.

No error code. Forgot to try safe mode. Laptop on home network. Not new install. I'll try the command prompt and safe mode.

I pinged and it sent 4 packets and recvd 4 packets in 49 ms average. Still can't connect in safe mode on anything other than IE...take that back, IE wouldn't connect because of no connection found.

Did you do Safe Mode with networking? Sounds like you just did Safe Mode.

    you're right....rechecking now!

Nothing changed in safe mode. IE works, but nothing else. When I click update in CCleaner or MB the update won't connect...even in CC which opens an IE page and won't connect.

Have you tried uninstalling CC and then reinstall it to see what happens?

Didn't realize this was not a genuine copy of Windows 7 Home Premium. She had a co worker help her with this laptop years ago and whatever he did that was the outcome. It was genuine at the start. I searched for the Product Key internally and the one on the physical label and they weren't accepted as valid. She's a single mother with 2 kids and so just trying to get it going for her. It generally runs ok, but doesn't get updates obviously.

AVG is probably the cause of the problems, especially the Web Tune Up if it's installed (check add-remove programs).
Also, try uninstalling FF and when reinstalling it set it as default browser.
