There is something not quite right here ....
I do not see that - I see the window shown in the screenshot below immediately after hitting the Reset button with IE open ....

Every time I see mention or Norton the alarm bells start ringing - I wonder ....

I never get to the window in your screenshot. When I get back from work I'll look into Norton's and see if I can find something. Maybe even disable it and see what happens.

    Hello Rojam,
You have to actually hit the reset button to see this popup dialogue box. It can be cancelled and backed out of.

    ----------------------------------

    Hi Pete,
I think Rojam has something that is offering him additional help, tutorials and information when using windows 7. If you click on the button, in IE asking for a reset, in the pop-up box, in bottom lower left hand corner, is a link entitled: "How does resetting effect this computer ", it will call up a page with an explanation and a statement that includes a quote of the warning that Rojam is seeing.

    NOTE 2nd paragraph:

Goddez1, I have clicked on the button and it gives me the message described in my previous posts. (Before you can reset IE settings, you must close all other windows and programs)

    Hi Ann

I'm using Windows 7 Pro x64 and the first click on the Reset button gives me the window I posted in the the screenshot above. Clicking on the link you noted brings up the same info from your URL, but in Windows Help & Support integral with the OS. I see no message "--Before you can reset IE settings, you must close all other windows and programs "- unless that comes after hitting the reset button in the window I posted.

Under the circumstances I'll reset IE8 on my Win 7 Pro x32 laptop and see what happens :)

    I will return :D

    Hi Rojam,

If you have mutiple IE browser/windows open you will get the warning you see. I too, also get the warning if I try a reset with 2 or more IE browser open. I can, how ever do a reset with only one browser open or using control panel.ie optons icon as previously dirrected. (NOTE* Popup warnig is seen only with multiple browsers opened, not multiple tabs. Many opened tabs in one browser does not seem to be an "option/reset" problem.)

The warning of a reset being "irreversible" perhaps is not the best choice. A reset will set many things back to the way it was when IE 8 was first installed. Any settings, toolbars, addons, passwords, or popup exceptions etc will have to be redone by yourself. IE will not remember or restore these settings, you must know your passwords etc, or have these set to pin and paper somwhere, for this not to be a problem. In other words if IE was not a problem for you to manage when first installed, it should not be to much to overcome on a reset.

    ----Hmmmmmm------------------
Personally, I'm beginng to wonder if this isn't more a matter of not noticing or missing, (based on options and preferences set in IE, for windows and tabs and taskbar grouping) That IE is actually working but Rojam is losing track of wither it is a tab, a grouped browser or a reused tabed, even.) Easy enough to do if you have enough links opened.

Ann seems to have sorted that out - I have just reset IE 8 on my Win 7 laptop with just a single incidence of the browser open with no issues. Seems that multiple instances of the browser running triggers the message as Ann posts.

    Pete and goddez1,
I'm really grateful to both of you for staying with me on this problem. If ever I get to the point where I can reset IE, I now feel more secure about it thanks to goddez1 explanation of "irreversible ".

Before going to Tools>Advanced>Reset, I closed all tabs and exited out of IE. As for as I know, no programs are running. When I hover over the taskbar icon for IE it doesn't show that any pages are open. I then go to Start>Control Panel>Internet Options and follow through to the Reset button. I then click on this button and get the Before you can reset IE settings, you must close all other windows and programs window.

If anything is open or running, I have no way of knowing. Can something be running in the background that I am unaware of??

As I posted earlier I reset IE with IE open and the usual background programs running and did not receive any warning re closing other windows, etc.

You could try booting into Safe Mode and trying a Reset from there - Windows cannot run more basic than in Safe Mode.

Norton is still at the back of my mind :)

Could do as Pete suggests but a quick check, using method below, may also be helpful.

Call up "Task Manager ", check to see if any Ieplorer.exe tasks are running, if so end task on them.

    To do so:
    >Right click on taskbar and select "start task manager "

Progress made!!! I tried a couple of things,
First, I disabled Nortons and tried to reset IE--same results.
Second, I did check Task Manager to see if any programs were running, none were. (I surprised myself for thinking of that.) However, I still could not reset IE.
Third, I followed Pete's advice and rebooted into safe mode. In safe mode I was able to reset IE. I then rebooted into normal mode. I opened IE and navigated to the reset button, clicked on it and, bingo, there it was , the screen with the option to reset. I cancelled out of that.

Progress, but I will still have to wait a while to see if the icons will continue to operate, since they always worked after a reboot but quit after a period of time.

    Hoping for the best,
    Ron

Hopefully resetting IE has done the trick - at least you now have a degree of normality in Normal mode.

I wonder if one of your add-ons is/was the problem - we shall see :)

Well, here it is a day later and the shortcuts are still working. Apparently the reset has solved the problem.

    Pete and goddez1,
Thanks to both of you wonderful people for sticking with me on this. Besides solving my problem, you to have giving me tips that will come in handy some day down the line.

    Again many thanks,
    Ron :)
