    Windows XP SP3 download question

    Broni:

In trying to find the XP SP-3 download on my computer, the instructions at "Slipstreamed Windows XP CD Using SP3" state:

The second step is to navigate to where you downloaded the Service Pack 3 file. If you downloaded SP3 from Microsoft it will most likely be named en_windows_xp_service_pack_3_release_candidate_1_x86_60967.exe. Copy the file to the XP-SP3 folder if it wasn't downloaded there initially.

I've done a search and cannot find this file in my computer.

I went to Microsoft.com, and downloaded SP 3, but the filename is different: it is named: WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe

Could this possibly be a file that was released at a later date then when the "Slipstreamed Windows XP CD Using SP3" article was written?

    Thanks - Paul

You'll be fine with the file you just downloaded.

    Bruni:

First off, let me begin by wishing you a belated "Happy Holidays! "

Next, as per the instructions, I am attempting to extract the contents of the downloaded SP3 file, and am entering the following command into the "run" dialogue box:

    "C:\XP-SP3\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe -x" (no quotes)

But instead of getting the "Choose Directory for Extracted Files" dialogue box, I'm getting the "Open File - Security Warning" box, containing

"Do you want to run this file? "

    "Name: WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe "
    "Publisher: Microsoft Corporation "
    "Type: Application "
    "From C:\XP-SP3 "

As per the directions, the "-x" command at the end of the path & filename is supposed to extract the contents of the file and ask you where you want them extracted to, but this is not what I'm getting.

    Can you help?

    From the site you provided:

From some sources I hear you will need a Windows XP Home or Professional with SP2 Setup CD. You cannot slipstream SP3 into an original Windows XP CD or an XP with SP1 CD. Slipstreaming SP3 will only work with an XP + SP2 CD. Others have suggested that slipstreaming with an SP1 integrated CD does work. Here is what I found:

Windows XP (Gold): Slipstreaming SP3 seemed to work fine... until it came to the point I had to activate Windows XP. It would not activate XP over the Internet & could also not update via the phone using the automated system. I didn't speak to a live person about it though. Without activating I couldn't use Windows Update.

Windows XP + SP2: Slipstreaming SP3 worked fine. I also was able to skip putting in the product key during installation (which was not an option with the XP gold 'slipstreamed' version). I had to activate to use Windows Update - which worked without a problem using the Internet activation - I didn't get any errors on Windows Update, and updates were provided.

What I have is an XP Pro disc that only has SP1. Am I out of luck?

    Thanks - Paul

    Update:

    Broni:

First off. let me apologize for not getting back to you sooner!

I had a buddy come over to look things over: he had a look inside the computer case and discovered a blown capacitor on the motherboard. He is trying to determine if this is a "dealbreaker ". It is his current opinion that since this system has not had Windows reloaded for about 4 years, the system files may be corrupted beyond repair. He said: "If this were my PC my main goal would be to get any critical data off the PC backed up to an external drive and replace the PC ASAP. "

I may well have to look for a new computer. I've been looking around for a machine equipped with Windows 7 Professional, but these seem to be getting scarcer by the minute, and I'm not sure I can or want to handle the learning curve to go straight from Windows XP to Windows 8.

I cannot thank you enough for all you've tried to help me with, and will certainly "make a donation to the cause" when I can find a job using a computer that actually works!

I do have a number of programs that we have installed (along with the logfiles produced by same) and would like your input for the best way to remove these. They do not show up under "All Programs" nor do they show up in "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel "

I also tried to use Revo Uninstaller, but they do not show up under the list of installed programs there, either?

I appreciate everything you've done to help me and want to wish you a Happy New Year!
