    Did you allow that update?
    Possibly chkdsk fixed something.

As for step 3 you MAY need Windows CD but we won't know until you run step 3.

I clicked to install, and rec'd:

"Installing cumulative security update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP KB2761465 "

Since Windows Update will not let me review my update history online, I checked in Add/Remove Programs and it indicates that this update was installed on 12/12/2012?

Will try step 3 & cross my fingers that it does not need the CD.

It is asking for the CD.

"Files that are required for Windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache. "

"Insert your Windows XP Professional CD-ROM now. "

I guess I have to abort Step 3?

No. It means that you have some issues with system files and you'll need that CD to fix it.
Ask around. Borrowed CD will do.

Sadly, everyone I know has already upgraded to Windows Vista, 7, or 8.

I will ask around & see what I can come up with, though.

I guess we've got to call it a night on this one?

The recovery partition on my hard drive is of no use for this, right?

(Expecting response "yes, and yes "...) :)

Only if you wanted to reinstall Windows but I don't think you want to do this.

Let me know how your hunting went.

    Hi Broni:

Forgot to ask: will I need the product key for a disc if I can find one?

    Thanks - Paul

I finally got my hands on an XP Pro disc...

    Broni:

I got my hands on an XP Pro disc, but while attempting Step 3 of Windows Repair v1.9.2 (as described in Post #58 of this thread), I'm getting the error message:

    Windows File Protection

    Possible reasons for this problem:

    - You have inserted the wrong CD. (i.e., a different Windows product CD than the version installed)

    - The CD-ROM drive in your system is not functioning.

I verified that the CD drive (actually a DVD burner) is working, by using another disc.

    What to do?

    Thanks - Paul

Is the CD Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3 on it?

I borrowed it from a friend of a friend who'd bought it along with a laptop he purchased a few years ago. It is in the original box along with all the supporting literature and documents.

Yes it is Windows XP Professional. Is there a way to tell from the product key whether or not it's SP3?

When I "open" the disc on the DVD drive, all I see at the bottom is a file called WIN51IP.SP1.

To further clarify, the disc contains the following folders:

    -DOCS
    -DOTNETFX
    -I386
    -SUPPORT
    -VALUEADD

    And then the files:
    -AUTORUN
    -README
    -SETUP
    -SPNOTES
    -WIN51
    -WIN51IP
    -WIN51IP.SP1

Will this cause a problem for my friend's friend if he ever needs to do a reinstall on his laptop?

They both work for one of the largest software companies (I'd rather not say who) and I don't want to get anyone into trouble. My version is what originally came with my computer. Will using his product key cause any "issues" for him down the road?

After reading more closely, it appear that I will not need to use the product key to perform the slipstreaming described.

I'll work on this and get back.

    Thanks - Paul
