    Broni:

As it's getting late out here on the east coast, I may well re-enable Avast. ESET has been running for over 52 minutes, and is only 29% complete.

Since I'm going to have to leave it running overnight, for safety's sake, do you agree that I should re-enable it?

    Thanks - Paul

No reason. While scanning with Windows firewall on you're safe.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I hope you have a great evening.

Thanks again for all your help: I've been looking for a job online and many sites require you to use IE to fill out their online applications. My IE8 is just NOT working - errors on pages, pages loading very slowly and/or not working correctly, etc., etc.

Not to mention that I'm concerned about security warnings and other issues whenever I use IE...

    Again, thanks - Paul

When done with Eset you need to follow my reply #36 regarding resetting IE.

    Roger that.

Will do. Tonight - if I can keep my eyes open long enough for ESET to finish... :D

    Btw...

Arie (the Admin) had helped me a bit earlier today before you were "on duty ", but he never had time to reply to an issue that had come up:

Please see Post #23 regarding WinPatrol detecting a file association change.

Lastly, did everything look OK in the "Log from SecurityCheck.exe ", as seen in Post #33?

It has been a long day: I'm keeping my eyes propped open with toothpicks...

Reset IE, but still getting "done but with errors on page" message

I reset IE using the Microsoft Fixit tool as instructed - including checking the box for "Delete personal settings" - but am still getting the "Done, but with errors on page" message on a few different websites.

(Below are the error details - note that it says user agent Mozilla/4.0 despite the webpage in question was opened with IE 8)

    Windows Internet Explorer

"Errors on this webpage might cause it to work incorrectly "

    Webpage error details

User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0)
    Timestamp: Thu, 20 Dec 2012 22:44:01 UTC

    Line: 54
    Char: 2
    Code: 0
    URI: http://durhamnc.gov/ich/as/hr/Pages/city_jobs.aspx

Thanks for any suggestions - Paul

"Done, but with errors on page" is actually not your fault or your computer problem.
    It's a web page issue.
    Read more: http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001032.htm

You can safely prevent IE from displaying those kind of errors.

Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab.
    Check "Disable script debugging "
Uncheck "Display a notification about every script error "

    Another...

 This error message actually occurred when I went to www.Monster.com - again, using IE 8.

(I'm using Firefox when using this forum since it doesn't crash like IE 8)

    Still can't run Windows Update

    Broni:

I made the recommended changes, and indeed the "Done but with errors on page messages are gone ".

I closed down IE, and reopened it, and tried again to run Windows Update to no avail.

    As in my first post:

"I am also unable to run Windows Update: each time I try, the webpage asks me to install Windows Update but when I click the "install" button the webpage disappears, and I get an error message to the effect "This tab has been recovered. A problem with the webpage has caused Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab."

Usually after two attempts, I then get the message

"Internet Explorer has closed this webpage to help protect your computer

A malfunctioning or malicious add-on has caused Internet Explorer to close this webpage.

    What you can do:

    • Go to your home page
    • Try to return to microsoft.com
    • More information

Very disconcerting to not be able to run Windows Update. Any thoughts?

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install the program then run it.

Go to Step 2 and allow it to run CheckDisk by clicking on Do It button:

Once that is done then go to Step 3 and allow it to run System File Check by clicking on Do It button:

Go to Step 4 and under "System Restore" click on Create button:

Go to Start Repairs tab and click Start button.

Please ensure that ONLY items seen in the image below are ticked as indicated (they're all checked by default):

Click on box next to the Restart System when Finished. Then click on Start.

Chkdsk is running now. (Communicating with you via the nearby laptop)

I noted that on step 3 it says that I will need my Windows installation disk, which Gateway did not supply me with when I bought this computer.

    What to do?

When the computer rebooted, I noticed the yellow "updates are ready for your computer - click here to install these updates

Windows found one update (no info supplied as to what it is)

Makes no sense - I can't connect to Windows update but Automatic update works on reboot?
