Thanks for links Pete. The trouble though, is that Sandra Lite version 2010 is not for Windows 98. Sandra Lite XI is, that's why I found a download for that version. Check the System Requirements.

Try to get it from PCAuthority website if you can [Edit: the links at PCAuthority appear to be dead now]. I can't see any other download sites that I would recommend.

No drama Pete! Thanks for filling in.

I am going to issue a smack over the wrist. I don't believe Windows 98 should be taken onto the internet. It has not been supported by Microsoft for a few years now. It does not have the security to be taken on the internet. MIR11 read through this (one of my rants)

The reason why your internet is going so slow is that it is probably being used by every would-be hacker on the internet.

Windows 98 (SE) would be excellent as a stand-alone machine, that is, not connected to the internet, running programs that were designed for it. My Win 98 system(s) would fly and were more stable than my current Windows XP computers. Apart from hacking, once you connect Windows 98 to the internet and start to get any programs and updates, it begins chewing up resources because suppliers seem to expect you to have an unlimited amount that they can use. [As a small example, if you install the software for a HP multifunction printer, it installs into well over 1GB of disk space, then runs several background programs.] A "small" system can no longer cope.

Run Windows 98 if you like, get software that will run on it, but I would implore you not to use it to work on the internet.

I felt I needed to mention it. I wanted to keep running Win 98 indefinitely, but MS were not going to keep supporting it and not only could it be easily compromised, it could be used to attack other computers on the internet and make their owner's experience a misery.

I considered going to Linux as an affordable alternative. I know of people that have been set up to boot to CD version of Linux to go onto the internet and avoid any security risks. I would look at doing that rather than taking Windows 98 on the 'net.

As regards identifying the modules, it is probably not significant to identify it/them. You noticed the notches, as long as the notches match the slots on the motherboard, you can try running them (be careful though, some notches are only slightly different, so don't force them into the slot). If I remember correctly PC100 and PC133 were interchangeable and would run together, but the system runs them on the slowest speed, that is, PC100 if both were mixed together or the motherboard was PC100 only.

If the modules will physically fit onto the motherboard you can try them. If they work, they work, if they don't, they don't.

    Matt
PS Increased RAM will increase the system's speed overall. If the problem is only related to the internet, increased RAM won't help.
