I have an older laptop, it's a DELL Inspiron 600m

The hard drive is dying, and I need a new one. Stock drive is 20GB @ 4200rpm which is rubbish of course.

So i'm wondering is there any SSD that would be compatible/detectable by this old of a motherboard???

Something like http://discountechnology.com/Products/2-5-Drives-Laptop?sort1desc=F&sort1=Item_ONLINECUSTOMERPRICE or whatever else would be applicable.

Looking for something in the 40GB+ range, the cheapest price I can find as I'm a unemployed college student.

    Thanks

I'm not sure why you would want to put in a Solid State Drive. I think the IDE interface would defeat the purpose of the faster read/write on the SSD ( I could be wrong and I am sure someone will correct me if I am). Stick with a standard IDE, shop around for the best deal you can afford.

Well the issue with speed is that even a 4200rpm drive (ugh) runs extremely hot, as high as 131° F. I assume that a SSD would run much cooker as it has no moving parts? And be faster than said current drive.

You won't be able to afford any SSD drive!

Affordable SSD drives are all using the SATAII (or SATA 3) interface. The few IDE SSD drives you'll find cost top dollar ($500 & up is what I found).

I think 131° is within the operating temp range, an external cooler would help; a SSD would be cooley. As far as the speed of the HD goes -- yes the SSD would be faster than the older drive. But you said

Are there particular brands or models that are known to run bit cooler than the others?

As Arie said, you need an IDE drive and I wouldn't get one bigger than 80GB in case the motherboard won't recognise it.

If you have run low on space, the file system could be badly fragmented, which will cause constant drive activity.

If you don't have very much RAM, running programs will start getting stored on the hard drive (as Pagefile). Use a program like StartupCPL or Startup Cop to see if you can minimise the backgound programs.

I totally thought this link had SSD drives, but it doesn't seem to. Go figure. Apparently i'm retarded  :D

    Thanks everyone for your feedback!

One last question, should there be any compatability issue trying to put a 7200rpm drive in this old of a PC?

Other than the possible 80Gb limit posted earlier no, the speed won't matter but the size (capacity) may.

I doubt you'll find a 7,200rpm drive with IDE/PATA interface... but if you would, that would be fine.

I hope you are applying that to laptop-size drives only, because 7200rpm IDE/PATA desktop drives appeared like ten years ago :p As of something like 2004 there was then 10000rpm available on desktop-sized drives.

Yea, since a laptop drive was the source of this discussion.

OK, just to note that there are 7,200rpm laptop drives (2.5 ") available... but they are scarce.

    Look for Hitachi Travelstar 7K100.
