Windows Explorer always used to open on boot-up in Folders mode. Currently it opens showing the contents of one folder in the entire window.

How can I correct its ill manners?

I don't know how many times I have searched that list of Options, but I have not yet found an option which purports to open WE in Folders mode (i.e. with the folder system structure in a sub-window to the left, and the contents of the selected folder in a sub-window to the right).

Have I missed something? Please tell me what it is. :)

Right click on the shortcut you are using to open it with and choose properties. Where it says target, copy and paste what it says there into a post here.

Open My Computer or Windows Explorer > View > Explorer Bar > and make sure that "Folders" is tagged.

    Give this a shot:
Open Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options.

This is the problem. I can open Folder Options as many times as I like, but I cannot find an option which will start WE in Folders mode on boot-up. :(

I think we need to know how you are opening Windows Explorer. Any shortcut that has the Target as C:\WINDOWS\explorer.scf should open Windows Explorer as you want it.

That presumes that you have the Folders option tagged as I mentioned before.

    Note from above link:

Open any explorer window and click Tools>Folder Options>File Types tab. Select (None) Folder in the list and click Advanced button below. Select explore in the list and click Set Default. OK your way out.

I followed your link and found this:
If I follow Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer - right click and select Properties I don't get a target box. Perhaps if PeteC sees this he might clarify this issue.

It looked promising, but still no luck. :(

I checked these out with no success. Most of them refer to using WE from the command line - which seems to be a contradiction in terms to me.

One crazy thing about this is that - all by itself - this machine DID open WE in Folders mode for a while last week. Then it reverted to its old habits.

Funny, I always thought that computers were supposed to do what you tell them to do (even if you don't like the outcome). This beast seems to have a mind of its own. Maybe I should call it HAL! :)

Am I the only one missing something here? Is that the shortcut you're using to open windows explorer? It can't be. Outlook would open if that were the case.

What happens if you click start>run and type explorer, then click ok?

Ooops! I must have gone to the wrong place for startup. I wondered why a couple of other things weren't listed.

    Where do I find startup?

BTW: start->run "explorer" opened IE in folders mode.

    Hi Rick,

As I'm probably not really understanding the "problem ", try this:

Click Start | All Programs | Accessories. In the Accessories menu list towards the bottom you'll see Window Explorer. Right click on it and click Properties. In the Target box, amend the line to read: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e, C:\

From now on when you click WE, your C drive will be open and expanded. From there you can set the folder views to anything you want.

That's not suppose to happen. Are you sure it is IE? I somehow doubt it.

The solution to this problem appears to be recognition of a 'Pilot Error'. I had been opening WE by
    Start -> Programs -> Search.
    Using
Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Windows Explorer seems to have solved the problem. At least, it worked okay this morning.

    Thanks to all who assisted.

    Hi Rick,
The technical term for this is "PEBCAK" (Problem Exists Between Chair And Keyboard) :D and I'm The King! :p

How often do you access your C drive? If often, maybe put a shortcut on the Desktop or pin it to the Start Menu for easier access.

    Just a thought.
