Daft question that is driving me mad!
How do I get my folders (my docs etc) to always open with the folder tree-rather than having to click on the folder icon?

    Thanks

If I understand what you want to achieve - do this .....

Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer - right click and select Properties. In the target box replace %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe with %SystemRoot%\explorer.scf. This will cause Explorer to open with My Computer expanded in the left hand pane.

Then setup Explorer as you want for, say, C:\Windows with the folder tree in the right hand pane and the columms which you wish to see visible. Then go to Tools > Folder Options > View and click 'Apply to all folders'.

    Is this what you want?

Another method (courtesy of sd2 ;) ) is to open any explorer window and click Tools>Folder Options>File Types tab. Select (None) Folder in the list and click Advanced button below. Select explore in the list and click Set Default. OK your way out.

I've long had the same annoyance as Buttsy had, about how to open Explorer in folder view using XP, and finally decided to do a Google search for a solution.

I discovered this thread, and Windows BBS, from that search and also the answer to my question.

I tried Noahdfear's solution (relayed from sd2) and it was simple, quick and effective. I'd like to post my grateful thanks to him/her, and to Pete C, for their very helpful information.

I decided the site was so useful I'd register as a user so I could post this thankyou to Noahdfear, but then discovered the topic was too old so I couldn't do it.

Anyway, Arie has now allowed me to add my comments, so "Thanks ", Noahdfear.

    What a great site!
