    wildfire,

When I first posted that I was having a problem defragging (with signs of impending death & a brief history of the box), you immediately advised you didn't feel the HD or infection was causing the problem, and advised the box be cleaned, which I did.

I have tried to post relevant additional information as to what I was doing to try to solve the problem myself while waiting for input and assistance from gracious helpers who are usually happy to help someone who doesn't know as much as they do.

I have also run the manufacturer's diagnostics, as you advised. By the way, the link you provided only took me to a general download page, and not to the specific file I needed.

The test took nearly 24 hours. The computer ran well during the test, with no detectable overheating, clicking, whirring, or sounding of the "siren ". The test result was that bad sectors were found and then there was an error during repairs with a message to contact WD technical support.

No problem Harpo I will defend myself by saying download the diagnostics "starting from here" :)

I am worried why the test took 24 hours though (actually curious would be a better description) and would advise you follow the instructions to contact WD support.

To close this thread, there was no resolution. Files were backed up/removed, unnecessary programs were uninstalled, and the computer was given to a teen with his understanding that it could die at any time.
