I'm having a similar problem. I have a HP 655 notebook and when I try to load windows explorer or Chrome (or about anything) it will try to load for an extremely long time and than tell me that its not responding. then my screen greys out and I'm forced to do a hard shut down. (the computer won't allow me to interact with anything like the start button or the restart button) It does this whether its hot or cold, and it's gotten progressively worse.I've also ran multiple virus scans and my computer is as clean as a whistle.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm at a loss as to what to do and what is wrong.

I did a hardware diagnostic after I posted. It looks like my hard drive is starting to fail. Right now I can't post my system specs because my computer keeps locking up. I don't know what the make or model of the hard drive is but when I ran the diagnostic tool, It gave me a failure ID: Q4KT1L-6N76PM-MFKT1A-61DD03. I'm not sure what any of this means or if there is enough info for anyone to help. I haven't changed anything or upgraded anything so all of the hardware should be what originally came with the computer.

While this may be true, most places will let you upgrade what they have to offer on a $300.00 computer and will turn it into a $800.00 or more computer.

A program (FREE) like Belarc Advisor will tell you everything you need to know about your PC. Link to Belarc Advisor CLICK

Have you tried Safe Mode with networking and see if you can get anywhere with it?

    Is it still under Warranty?
