And you already tried installing the latest drivers for your network and wireless card?

It looks like we may have to do a repair install of Windows since it seems that some windows functions aren't working properly. Before proceeding, back up any important data on your computer. Then follow the step by step instructions here, How To Perform a Windows XP Repair Install.

Do you have a USB flash drive? Backing up files is pretty simple. Its just a matter of going into your documents, favorites, pictures, music, etc. and copying them over to your USB flash drive, or a CD.

Have a look at this article for more information, What Files Should You Backup On Your Windows PC?

    Evan,
I understand that the process of copying files is a simple one, (click & drag a folder/file) from one drive to the cd drive or to my USB flash drive, but my windows program on my computer will not allow to do this simple fuction. Is there another way to copy files/folders or do I have to just go ahead and to the repair process and hope nothing goes awry?
Also I tried to create a back up utility thru Start > All programs > Accessoires > System Tools, But no Back up option appear under Systems tools on the program on computer. Can I run a windows from my cd drive and create a back up utility?
    Thx
    Stephen

What happens when you attempt to drag and drop files to your CD Drive/USB flash Drive? Do you get an error message?

I would hope that you get your data backed up before you attempt to do a repair install. But yes theoretically the repair install should leave all your data intact and should complete without an issue. However, if the repair install were to fail and you didn't back up your data before hand then you could be in a tough situation.

Try accessing the backup utility this way. Click Start< Run and type ntbackup.exe and hit enter. See if the backup utility opens now.

No you can't but what version of Windows XP do you have?

    Evan,
Nothing happens. I don't get any error messages.
I am running Windows XP (SP3) that I downloaded from MS the other day.
Windows say it can't find ntbackup.exe.
    Thx

I re-read your first post and saw that you were running Windows XP Home Edition.

The Windows Backup Utility isn't included in Windows XP Home Edition so thats why you couldn't find it.

Since for whatever reason you can't copy and paste files to your USB flash drive in normal mode, lets see if you can copy and paste your personal files to your USB flash drive using Safe Mode. Follow the instructions here to boot Windows XP into Safe Mode, How to boot into Safe Mode in Windows XP.

Once you boot the computer into Safe Mode see if you can copy over any of your personal data to your USB flash drive. Let me know if that method works or not.

Hi Evan & 12sjm56, I've just been reading through your threads and wonder whether this problem all stemmed from the installation of SP3 recently?
Having said that - I'm running XP Home SP3 on one of my comps and just tried copying Documents to a USB 8GB thumb drive - no problems.
If I Right click on a file in Documents - I have the option to Send to open up and then click on Transcend (F: ) (thumb drive) and it's done.
Several files can be sent at once by Shift and arrow up/down as required.
    Are Administrator permissions set correctly?
    Cheers Neil.

    Hey Evan,
Happy New Year to you and yours. I hope it is as friutful and successful as you wish it to be.
    I tried to reboot in Safe Mode and when it got to the desktop it did not display the start button, so I rebooted in Safe Mode with a cmd prompt and got;

C:\Documnets andSettings\Administrator> I tpyein MSCONFIG and nothing happen.

    At the top of the cmd screen the Window version reads as follows;
    "Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    C>Coppyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

I don't know if that info helps.
    Thx
    Stephen

In Safe Mode with Command Prompt, when Command Prompt opens type taskmgr and hit enter. Task Manager should open. Now click File< Run and type explorer.exe. Your Start Menu and Taskbar should now appear.

If that doesn't work then enter just Safe Mode and when you log in press Ctrl, Shift, Esc to open Task Manager. Now click File< Run and type explorer.exe to start the Windows Explorer process.

    Hi All,
I know its been awhile since my last response but economics dictates everything these days. So an update: I finally got a external storage drive and backed up all the files that think I wanted. I then did a clean re-install of Window XP Pro. I found my pc wireless card drivers online from the mfgr and re-installed them and I am now communicating with you online from my on computer again. So let me first thank you all again for helping me get back to this point.

So everything is almost back to normal, maybe even better due to the new install, faster, except because of the xp version is so old (MS Windows XP Professional Version 2002), I don't have any of the service packs. So I downloaded SP1,2 and 3, but SP1 runs the wizard to a certain point and fails. The error message is "Server did not respond ". SP3 won't load unless SP1 is loaded.
I looked thru the forum for some answers, but nothing gets me pass this point. Do I have to by a new version of the MS software?
    Thx

    Glad everything is working better.

No. Don't worry about installing SP1. Just go ahead and install SP2 since it doesn't require SP1 to be installed first. Once SP2 installs reboot the computer then install SP3.
