Forgot to post a reply to close this one out - sorry.

First, thanks to all who responded.

Second, the answer was, indeed, to remove all existing partitions and formatting from the target disk and then copy the C:\ and D:\ partitions over from the source, turn off the PC, unplug the source drive, then restart. Windows assigned new C:\ and D:\ letters to the new drive and everything is peachy.

Strangely, the only programme that needed reinstalling was the anti-virus software, everything else just copied over with no loss.

For reference, I used R-Drive Image, started from a boot disk, and the on-screen prompts couldn't be simpler.

    Thanks again.

    Clone System Partition

I have just cloned my XP pro system partition to a second hard dive using the Freeware XXClone software and it worked really well. I changed the boot.ini so that I can boot from either version and the drive letter automatically changes to C:\ and the other Partition becomes the clone on, in my case, H:\. I hope this helps.

    clogman,
    thanks for the feedback!

I had the same problem with Norton Internet Security 2005 which needed reactivation (no reinstallation necessary).

Which antivirus software was installed on your computer?

I'm using AVG Free (cheapskate that I am). When the pc starts with the new disk, an alert flags up saying the email scanner is off and the virus database is out of date. Takes only 2 minutes to repair (rather than re-install) but it's just odd that this is the only thing that fails to clone. Something to do with anti-vius coding.

I have actually changed my 3.5" HDD in my SFF computer, for a 2.5 ". Smaller, a LOT quieter, seems about the same performance on timing Windows start-up and reading / writing big files, and it runs a lot cooler. Plus, it will allow more airflow in my Qbic box. I'm going to start a new thread about something related, so if anyone wants to dive in again, it would be much appreciated.
