How to configure McAfee Firewall for Remote Desktop

Trying to use remote desktop (windows xp) over VPN from home to work after installing McAfee Personal Firewall 8.1. Was getting cryptic network connection failures after logging in via remote desktop. The non-obvious solution is that the 'XMas' Scan under Intrusion Detection must be disabled.

McAfee Security Center / Home / Internet & Network / Configure / Firewall Protection is Enabled / Advanced / Intrusion Detection / 'XMas' Scan
should be unchecked (disabled)
