I've been thinking about 4 Gb for the desktop, but I wonder if I would notice a performance improvement

Yes, that is inaccurate. For 32-bit, it is the case that the system will only use around 3GB, but 64-bit can use 128GB.

That's exactly right - 4gb on a 32-bit operating system. If you use the 64-bit operating system (well you figure it out - but 64-bits is a lot, lot larger number of numbers - so with more numbers more memory can be addressed. 8 tera-bytes for the 64-bit systems. Now you know why we switched to a 64-bit operating system. But be sure your processor is capable of handling the 64-bit data path before upgrading the operating system to XP-64(good) or vista-64(dog), or windows 7.

    Thx Arie.
What I heard must have been in reference to my machine (32 bit).

    4 GB on main computer:
    Intel Core2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66 GHz
BIOS recognizes all 4 GB, XP sees 3.25 GB

The 'real' reason for installing 4 GB is that the hardware
choice was either 2 or 4; 3 was not an option. Net cost
of upgrading from 2 GB to 4 GB was about $25.

Windows 32 bit will see only ~3.3 - 3.5 Gb RAM, thus installing 4 Gb gives you the max RAM possible.

With 64 bit systems 128 Gb or more can be used.

This subject has been covered in several threads here.

This is what I had read here previously, hence my confusion.
So Pete, another question is whether or not it's worth the cost of the additional GB (of RAM) for the .3 - .5 gain?
    What do you think?

Depends on how much multitasking you do. I have run, with 2 GB, a Windows98 window which had 512 mb sent off to it, and one of two different games that like a bit of memory... So it is worth it, if you run multiple virtual machines, for example.

BTW, why does Win32 only accept 3.5 GB? Seems odd to me.

    Not a clue!

Thx for your response. I do run many windows, so maybe I'll check on the current RAM price.
