All we can do is try. When your ready to give the new installation of hard drive and sound card a go. Let me know. The instructions for your card weren't very complicated. Shutdown, put card in pci slot, reboot and when windows detects the card, click cancel on any installation and use the downloaded package to setup the card. Reboot and you suppose to be good to go. If not there's a few things one can do, but we'll cross that road if and when we get to it.
Chapter 2 covers installation and installation

*Note to self...Install the driver with CTZAPXX.EXE in the drivers folder.
    -------------

Where did you get this card? Last ditch effort based on the sticker number 6002172, you mentioned: # indicates that this just may be an HP OEM card and will require their drivers.

Notice the top two google hits. They lead to older gateway drivers and software. This is only if nothing else seems to work.

Now you're asking the good questions Ann.
I bought this from someone, somewhere, sometime back.
    Is that clear enough?
    That's actually all I know officer. :D

    Pulled over speeding.
Cop tells me the limit is only 65 miles an hour here.
I say I'm not going to be out that long.

You might have to think about that one for a moment.

Reformatted and set up Win XP Pro
    Two problems:
    1. Message during setup "Cannot copy file SS3dfo.scr" Though in looking online this file appears to be irrelevant.
    2. After setup and Xp seeming to run fine I loaded the driver from Creative and got message, "Setup unable to find supported product ". Same message I received last time I tried this.

What does device manager show? Is sound card recognized as being there?

Make sure plugNplay service is enabled and started in "services ".

Got to pull the sound card and put it another slot. If it isn't detected by Windows system you can't install drivers, hence the Creative error "setup can not find any device ". If windows can't find it Creative setup can't either.

Review your manual and the setup/install procedure. It is
    shutdown windows
    put card in
    reboot
windows will detect a new device,
    cancel windows driver setup,
    use downloaded setup.
    Reboot

    Worst case:
sound card will be detected in device manager but disabled due to no drivers
    Click on sound card
    click on update driver button
select path and point it to the extracted download sub directory of "drivers "

    --------------------
What is the name of the driver package you downloaded?

Don't forget to disable on board sound.

SB now shows in Device Mgr. (Automatically detected after shut down and slot change of card). Go figure!
Currently downloading iTunes to verify sound.
Don't know how to disable onboard. Did it last time, but don't remember.
    Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9

    Device manager:

Is oem sound chip also shown in sound category? If so, double click on it to check properties and click on "disable ". I believe you previously stated that you had been into bios and there is no option to disable on board sound. This is the work around for that OEM problem. You can only have one sound device working or there will be a conflict.

Does device manager>creative sound >have any ticks in it indicating a problem?

Are drivers loaded for device. (red x, exclamation marks etc.)

Can you test sound scheme, via control panel sound icon?
What happens when you assign a sound or test it with button.

Speakers connections all plugged in correct holes and if power plugged into wall. Volume turned up all the way.

Is sound service/audio started in services?

I'm downloading from NVIDIA as we speak.
It says, The drivers for this device are not installed.
When I do a reinstall it always fails.
Hopefully the download will be the fix.

That's a good question and I'm not sure how to answer that one. I always had backed up favorites and backups of backups but I always did it using the import/export method. Got lot's of flash thumbnails and routine system backups with html's and jsons galore.

Got to be an easier way than hooking old hard drive yet again. I will have to pass the buck on this one.

    That did it.
    You're the greatest Ann!!!

Is there a way to rename my computer?
I made the mistake of giving my name to which it added numbers that I deleted, and now I can't use my name to ID myself.

What you said just gave me an idea. I can go into the old HD and backup the bookmarks to a flash drive and then load them into Mozilla on the new drive.
Do you know how I'd back them up? Not sure where to look.

Also, the iTunes library got a bit messed up in the transfer (cloned HD and used it but it didn't quite translate). Do you know if there's a way to hook up both HD's and copy the iTunes library from the old HD to the new?

OK,OK, yes - I ask a lot of questions. (It's always a pain switching drives, since I'm so used to the old one.)

    Try this:

    * Right click on the 'My Computer Icon' on the desktop.
    * Choose Properties
    * Click the 'Computer Name' tab.
    * Click the 'Change' button
    * Type in the name in the field provided.
    * Click 'OK'
    * Close the properties window and restart the computer when prompted.

There is no tab "Computer Name ".
I tried both the desktop icon and the menu listing.
There's another way to find this, but I don't recall.
