I have some weird things happening with my computer lately. 1 of 2 things (or both) is possibly I have a virus or malware implanted. So lets eliminate the possibility that it is malware/virus of some kind 1st before I go into onto another forum to explore software incompatibility.

Symtoms: Something is eating up about 1/3 a gig of my harddrive memory each week. When surfing, initially I can open say 10 windows, as time goes on, fewer and fewer windows will open, until after an hour of so, only 1 window can be open. It litterally binds my computer up so it can not function. When I turn off the computer and restrart it, it works "normal" again, but bogs down shortly there after as described above. This has been happening for about 2 months now. It also effects my excel and outlook programs (had to reload excel) and keep getting a "'C:\program files\symantec antivirus\vpmsece.dll' could not be installed "every time I open outlook." Thus why I said, lets eliminate possibly viruses before tackling software incombatibility.

I have run spybot, adaware, and a complete NIS scan. ( did it last night and do so regularly) I checked for updates last night before doing so. (nothing much has been coming up except tracking cookies in the last couple of months).

Nothing came up for the extend.dat files when I searched as you suggested on the 1st link. I have tried doing the detect and repair (as ssuggested in the pop up box when I start outlook), it saying a dat file is missing and insert the MSO 03 and when I do that, it can not find the file. I tried that 2 months ago already. And frankly the headache of resaving all the email meessages, excel, IE, etc, is a major pain in the butt, as that is what needs to be done before I unistall MSO23 and then reinstall it as was suggested. I just do not have the time to ***** around with that right now. Honestly, I think it is the NIS07 that is screwing up my computer--as ever since I downloaded it, it has been slower than heck. I made a HUGE mistake buying NIS07--as I found out after the fact it is meant for Vista, and I have XP. But like I said--lets concentrate on any malware and viruses 1st to eliminate any possiblity it is that.

So lets keep the focus on viruses, which I believe I have. My computer froze up earlier in the evening, a box came up and said all system resources were at system capacity. I have 764 Ram and 1.7 G processor, so obviously something is chewing up memory like I mentioned in my 1st post. I had to manually shut the puter down as even the start menu would not come up to turn it off the normal way.

BTW, The 2nd link above is not valid.

On the 3rd it shows a number of program files and registry files that should be removed, (I think most are as I uninstalled the virtual girl program about 6 months ag when after 1 hour after I figured out it was screwing with my puter. So how would I actually view the registry and program files to double check for any left over **** from that program?

Are any of the files listed in the HJT log viruses or malware?

Do you know what the program ccApp is? Also what the cc Svc Hst.exe is? I know it is an application program-and that is it. It could be related to a virus and/or to the computer running at capicity. When I am turning off the computer, often a small pop up box says is it not reponding to ccApp or the ccSvcHst.exe and after a bit (5-10 seconds)the computer will turn off. Ibeleive they are clues as to why my computer is at capacity.

 

I remove the 2 items, updated and scanned with both spybot and adaware, nothing except cookies. Also ran ATF reg cleaner, not too much there, about 25 megs worth of stuff... have not noticed any difference.

And I am now down to where I can open only 1 window again as all the system resources are being used.

So any other itmes I should remove? Here is the new log file. If it is clear, then I probably move on to another forum if no viruses.

Basically I wanted to rule out viruses 1st.

Ever since I down loaded the NIS 07, it has been eating up memory like crazy, a 1/4 to 1/3 gig a week + the IE explorer problems too like I mentioned above. Ater the fact, I found out NIS07 was meant for Vista. And deep down I think that is the heart of my problem.... I should have kept NIS 06 and just paid the subscription fee (same price as the 07 CDs) as I had no problems with NIS06. I just think NIS 07 and XP are incompatible. I noticed instantly that web pages took a lot longer to come up.

So based upon your knowledge, with the MS IE program, what better AV programs do you recomend?

Some how, some way I have the stop the meemory eating that is going up or I'll be out of memory in few months time, not to mention the IE annoyances of system resources being eaten up too.
What do you think is my next best step? Post in the general security area or XP forum for guidance?

 

You keep saying memory, but,

refers to disk space. Are you saying that your disk space is disappearing, without good cause?

 

YES! I thought disk space is HD memory

I have 32Gig total HD, but what is available is being used up is adding week by week. The more I surf, the faster it is being eaten up. I have been keeping track of the size of downloaded files, and not even close to the rate of what my HD free space is be "obsorbed ".

BTW, I have been regularly doing disk cleanup too to remove temp files, compress old files, etc..

First, lets check/set your Temporary Internet Files reserved disk space setting (cache). In IE, click Tools>Internet Options>General tab>Settings button. Set the max cache size to 50 mb. Click OK and OK.

Temp files and System Restore points

*Note: Make sure you are comfortable with your last restore point being a good one be fore completing the System Restore cleanup outlined below.

Now, open My Computer and right click on Local Disk C: then select Properties. On the General tab, click Disk Cleanup. Once it scans and a dialog box opens, select all boxes, then click More Options tab. In the System restore section, click Clean up. When prompted 'Are you sure', click yes. Now click OK. *Disk cleanup can sometimes take quite a long time (hours), depending on the amount of old files to compress (you can skip that box for now if you want).

Reboot, then check your disk space.

See if you have Norton (Symantec) Protected Storage. If so, that can sometimes use up quite a lot of space.

There are also some freeware apps that show where your hard drive space is allocated, such as Spacemonger (check the free software tab for v1.40) , and can help pinpoint excessive areas.

 

My last system restore point was from yesterday, so no I am not comfortable with it. But I did delete a '06 restore point which had 600M

Also the cahe was 675 M I remember it being 50M 14 months ago... I reset it to 50M Funy thing is that it kept popping in my mind about it lately, but could not remember how to access it.

So how do I know if I have Symantec Protected Storage?

They are taking up a pretty decent chunck of memory. Both have a Aug 1, 2007 7:10pm date on them. Hmmmmmmmm..... That is when I had to shut down the computer and reboot.... They are taking up about the amount of Gs that I have been loosing the last 2 months.

Without researching Protected storage, I can't tell you for sure, as I'm not a Norton user, but it seems to me there is an option that refers to it when you right click the recycle bin.

Those are system files, and it is normal for them to be quite large. pagefile.sys is reserved for virtual memory, and would normally be anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times in size of the amount of RAM you have.

hyberfil.sys is created when the computer goes into hibernation. A bit of info about them both here
