Hmmm.....that's odd. It worked fine for me. I have attached a text file to this post. Save it to your desktop. Then rename it, changing only the extension .txt to .reg, then double click to merge. If that doesn't work, let me know and we can verify the keys manually.

Right click the text file and select rename. Type FixAddRemove.reg then hit enter. Then double click the file, which will no longer look like a text file, but a reg file. You may need to reboot for the changes to take effect.

It's my understanding that this will fix the add/remove problem. If it doesn't, you might consider emailing me a copy of the backups. I'd be happy to look through them and try to figure out what entries might have been removed and causing the problem.

When you unzipped RegSeeker to install, it should have created a folder by the same name. Open that folder, then the backup folder within it. Locate the first run backup file and right click>copy. Open Local Disk C:, right click a blank area and paste. Now rename it with a txt extension. It can then be attached to an email. Let me know what email program you use if you need specific instructions for attaching files. I will also send you a PM with my address.

    nana,

It can't be a wordpad file; it must be dos ".txt "file to use it as you wish, i.e., file that opens in notepad so save it from wordpad as ".txt" and try again.

Try this. Go to start>run and paste the following command, then hit enter.

    regedit.exe /e c:\hta.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.hta "

    Then this one.

    regedit.exe /e c:\hta.txt "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htc "

Open My Computer, then Local Disk C: and look for the hta.txt and htc.txt files. Open and copy/paste the contents here.

Wordpad files contain formatting information (like, for example font information characters that you can't see in the editor but must be in the file to make it look correct when displayed on the screen) which the operating system programs like regedit don't understand. System files like config.sys, boot.ini, and autoexec.bat must be plain text (without any special formatting information), such as notepad.exe files.

You did it right, nana, and those are the equivelent of the reg file from RegSeeker, which is supposedly the registry entry that was removed causing the add/remove problem. Paste the following commands in run this time.

    regedit.exe /e c:\hta.reg "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.hta "

    regedit.exe /e c:\hta.reg "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htc "

That will create two registry files in C: Make sure it does. Clean with RegSeeker again and if add/remove is not functional, double click those two files to merge, reboot and try add/remove again.

Did you get my private message with email addy? If none of this fixes the problem after running RegSeeker, restore the backup and we'll see if you can get a copy sent to me.

You stated in a previous post that
What sparrow was talking about is that it should have been a notepad file, which is the default editor for txt files. I assumed you just stated that incorrectly. ;)

Send a copy of the first cleaning you did and one of the latest cleaning that broke add/remove.

Glad you got it fixed, Nana! :D You have to take some credit for sticking it out and staying with Dave through this fix, too!

Now, DAVE, since you don't need to look through the 800 registry entrys anymore, would you PLEASE write that page I asked for?? TYS. ;)

Thought I would post the fix for any future users experiencing this same problem.

With the help of a fellow Googler, we found a reg file here, 9th post down, that contained some of the entries being removed from nana's system. RegSeeker was run and all entries deleted, until no more entries were found. The above mentioned reg file was then merged into the registry and RegSeeker was run again. This time, all entries found were not deleted, but added to the exclusions list.

    Happy to help nana. :)

    Johanna,

    I'll get on it.
