Copy and paste the following bolded command into the command window then hit enter.

    dir c:\windows\system32\*.cpl > c:\cpl.txt

Open C:\cpl.txt and post it's contents.

Hold the power button down until the computer shuts off, then try restarting. If you get the same, I recommend a repair installation.

If your operating system cd is a recovery cd rather than an operating system disc, it will not do a repair, but rather return your computer to the factory delivered state, eg; all your data will be lost.

    blank screen

    Hi!
If it comes up with a blank window again, how do I do a repair installation? I don't know how to do anything with a blank screen?? I can't get to anything.:(

I saw a site on the internet that offers a disk to repair PC's, it's Spotmau. If I order a disk, would that work? I have no disks with the Windows XP or recovery. XP came installed when I bought it.

    Thanks, Antiquer

You would have to have an operating system disc to do a repair installation. The link I provided in my last post tells how to do it.

I'm not at all familiar with Spotmau.

What kind of PC is it? It may have a recovery partition.

    blank screen

    Hi!
I turned the computer off and back on. It has the Windows logo with the little moving blue squares under it like it wants to boot?? All it does is keep moving the little squares. I have a Compaq Armada M700 laptop. It's been a great computer until all this! Can I just go anywhere and buy an installation disk? I'll do that today if possible. Thanks for al your help. I really appreciate the time you have taken.

The Armada M700 shipped with recovery cds, which means there is not a recovery partition. You would have to purchase an operating system disc, availability and price of which depend on your location.

Lets try something else first. Restart the computer. After the initial startup screen, begin tapping F8. This will bring up the Advanced Start Menu. Select 'Last Known Good Configuration' and see if it will boot.

I did that and it goes to the windows logo with the moving squares and back to the error message in post 23.

Might be cheaper to buy a used computer on Ebay, that's where I got this one?? The Windows XP software is expensive, looked at Wally World, $288.00!! I bought a warranty plan so I will check that out tomorrow!! :p

Where do I go to leave you points?? Never used this site befor but you have been so helpful!!

    Thanks, Antiquer
