I printed your post out so I could be as accurate as possible.
    I typed
    cd\
nothing seemed to change...after hitting enter the prompt looked like this:
    c>

I then typed the second line several different ways..first with no space between attrib and recycl
    then with
then spelled out recycle (just in case)
all efforts gave me the message
    bad command or file

    am I doing something wrong?

My mistake. I only put the # between the command and the commandline.

There should not have been any response after the frist command.

    So try again!

    command prompt

Hit enter at end of ea line. Where I left a # you leave 1 space, I did so you could tell where a space is suppose to be.

    cd\

    c:\windows\command\attrib# recycled\*.* # -h -s -r

If the above line dont work just go to next step below.

    {NEW STEP NEXT}

cd\recycled _(if you get error here stop and get back to us)

    copy krnl*.* # c:\windows\system

If it says 1 file copied reboot and try to come up in safe mode.

Wherever it stops or won't work just leave it and get back with results.

well crud.... I got bad command or file after the
    c:\windows\command\attrib recycled\*.* -h-s-r
    but I continued...typed
    cd\recycled
    nothing happened...typed
    copy krnl*.* c:\windows\system
    got
    file not found - krnl*.*

So I've grilled my son again...his story is...he was Kazaa...not in program files or anything and he deleted downloaded files through Kazaa...the went to recycle bin and he did not delete anything from the recycle bin...then later got an error and when he rebooted it was as it is now...Take that with a grain of salt because it came from a teenager who is just computer illiterate enough to be dangerous.

I'm assuming from what I just did that the file we're looking for is not in the recycle bin...A friend suggested that the file may be there but the ability to find the path may not. Is there anything to that theory?

There should be a space between the -h_ -s_ -r also.

Do it again with the spaces

    then from recycled

    copy krnl*.* c:\windows\system

I still get bad command or file name

I went on anyways and still got
    no files found - krnl*.*

It may or may not be there but it can be hidden.

    The attrib will unhide.

    so to find it

    cd\windows

    cd command

    dir attrib*.*

    get back with results

    Phewww!

Sorry I haven't got back sooner. Had to step out unexpectedly. Try this at the command prompt. To make sure it doesn't wrap and so you know where the spaces belong I'm going to use a question mark wherever there should be a space. Just replace each ? with a space.

    extract?/y?/L?c:\windows\system?c:\windows\options\cabs\win98_41.cab?krnl386.exe

If you don't get an error message reboot and see if you can get into windows. Gotta go for a bit again. Good Luck!

Ok at least this tells me you have a c:\windows\command folder.

But an important file is missing????? That shouldnt be!

    let's try another way

    type

    cd\windows\options\cabs

    type

    dir extract*.*

    Let me know!

    Good

If the extract command is available we may get somewhere

    So from there

    type

    c:\windows\extract /a /d c:\windows\options\cabs\win98_01.cab krnl*.*

see if it extracts the krnl386.exe

    if so type

    copy krnl*.* c:\windows\system

if this works then try to boot to windows "safe mode" again

    get back
