Help with a Stop: 0x0000007E Error

Hello,

I turned on my laptop today and was taken to a blue screen that says:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The bottom of the screen has the following technical information message:

***STOP: 0x0000007E (0xc0000005, 0x804E4196, 0xF8A26CE8, 0xF8A269E4)

This laptop does have windows XP. It will allow me to get into the menu screens when F2, F8 and F12 are pressed upon booting up but it will not allow me to make most selections and will promptly return to the blue screen when enter is hit.

I wonder if this is an operating system error or could it be a hardware error that requires a trip to the local computer experts? Please let me know if any help is available and if further information is required. I foolishly saved a work presentation on here that I hopefully will be able to retrieve.

Have you looked through this article, and if so what were your findings/conclusions?

 

Error message

The computer is 2 years old and has always had Windows XP it was not recently installed and there have been no hardware upgrades made. The computer is in as purchased condition aside from the usual software additions people make.

To be honest it may be a memory problem as discussed in the article and the error message does reference that in general passing. It also talks about the bios in the error message but again its talked about it in general.

I will be honest I am capable of making changes and problem solving things like this with some guidence but the majority of the article was over my head and under my feet!
