Computer is at present very slow in closing down and sometimes showing a black screen with caption "Task Host Windows ". THW can take even longer to close if "Force" is not clicked. I tried using the Registry key "WaitToKill" by reducing value to 2000, reducing figure lower increases THW being displayed. Default figure is 3000.

Right click on any empty space on the desktop choose New\Shortcut then enter shutdown -s -t 0 click next then name it Shutdown then click finish. Right click on the icon and select properties, then Change Icon. You more than like get some sort of dialog message ignore it just click OK it will you take you to the icons folder choose any icon you want click Apply and OK. Right click on the icon again and then pin it to the Taskbar. I have one for Shutdown and one for Restart.

Hi Bobby. Is your computer still shutting down slowly or is everything now working ok?

lj50, your suggestion is certainly a very good add-on and saves me one or two clicks on using the original MS Icon. Unfortunately, closing down of computer is still very slow indeed, roughly over two minutes. I think "Task Host Windows" is the main culprit, probably I am well out thinking this. Thanks.

Thanks will try figure 500. Tried Desktop Icon for "Restart ", but caption reads "Restart not found. Does your "Shut down" require a specific wording?

Changed "WaitToKill" modified to 500. I made an accurate time check - from clicking "Shutdown Icon" to actual close down of computer, as 105 seconds, with no references to "THW ". If all shutdown remains at 105 seconds, it will be acceptable and a good result. Thanks.

Shut down appears to be now 126 seconds. Only one HD and one USB stick permanently connected to computer. Thanks.
Can you please tell me, what is correct method to enter in "Restart" desktop icon, similar to "Shut down" icon. Thanks.

Hi Bobby. You can also follow step #12 in my guide for optimizing Windows 7 which will allow you to improve your Windows shutdown time without using a custom shut down shortcut if you wish.

lj50 Sorry on trying out the Restart procedure, caption shows that Restart can not be found.

elcajongunsfan, procedure simply flashes screen, no response.

Evan Omo, checked your step 12, entries appear to be different, unless that I am reading entries incorrectly.

    Thanks.

Nope, the values that I modified are more thorough than the one value you have changed in the registry. I am assuming that the WaitToKill key is the WaitToKillAppTimeout or the WaitToKillServiceTimeout entries as there is no key that is labeled as WaitToKill.

Did you follow the same procedure as in my post. R click on desktop New\Shortcut in the you box type shutdown -r -t 0 make sure the last character is 0(Zero) click next Name it Restart click finish. then follow the procedure to change the icon. O(Oh) is a letter, 0(Zero) is a number. Example 7:00am is not oh700 it's zero700hrs.

lj50 Apologies, I now see mistake of not typing in "Shutdown" as to my "Restart ". Now OK. Clicking icon Shutdown, time 135 seconds, Restart, time 315 seconds.

Evan Omo, apology, now checked "WaitToKillServicesTimeout" as current. Where is "WaitToKillAppTimeOut" found? and what is its function?

First either create a restore point or back up the registry. H_KEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. You might have to create the key. In the right pane right click Select New > String Value and name it WaitToKillAppTimeout set the Value Data to 2000 or lower. In the same pane Locate AutoEndTasks in the list and change it's value to 1. If it's not Listed create a New DWORD(32-but) Value and Name it AutoEndTasks and set the value to 1. You should not measure the time it takes to shut down. Different things are occurring each time the machine is shutting down, so shutdown times might vary.
