Hi guys, I am helping a friend out with his computer, possible bad hdd. My system is currently running a linux distro so I used the app "Disks" to check out the SMART data on the disk. Self test's overall all assessment is SELF-TEST FAILED. I then used GsmartControl to examine it further and came up with the following data output.

    smartctl 6.2 2013-07-26 r3841 [x86_64-linux-3.13.0-141-generic] (local build)

I used several techniques to try to get it to boot properly after five successful boots it would hang on the logo screen of Win 7. What I did can be viewed in the following thread in malware forum.

Hi rthompson. Does the computer boot into Safe Mode?

Do you have a Windows 7 USB flash drive or a Windows 7 DVD that you can use to boot the computer from?

You will need to create a Windows 7 DVD to reinstall the Windows 7 OS. You can find Windows 7 SP1 ISO files here, Windows 7 SP1 ISO Image Downloads.

You will need to download a torrent client to download the Windows 7 ISO image. Download the portable version of uTorrent and run the program.

After the program opens, click on the add link button and paste the download link of the Windows 7 ISO file that matches the version of Windows 7 that you have installed.

Once you have downloaded the ISO file you want, download and run the portable version of Active ISO Burner and burn the Windows 7 ISO file to a DVD.

Once you have your Windows 7 DVD follow the instructions in my guide to repair the Windows installation, How to repair Windows Vista or Windows 7.
