The new forum software defaults to the first post of a thread whenever I click on an email reply. The old forum software defaulted to the first unread post. Has anyone else noticed this behavior?

Even this software defaults to the 1st unread, in this case the link will show: Having To Scroll Down To Read Replies

    Code:
    https://www.windowsbbs.com/threads/having-to-scroll-down-to-read-replies.110982/unread

It works correctly for me - that is, it goes to the first non-read post. If, however, you cleared your cookies (or used a different browser) it will not know the last post you read so will go back to the top.

It only works if I sign-in first - which, I never did with VBulletin software, and it always took me to the first unread post.

If you are not on a shared computer there is no need to sign out. This is different software, your 'last read' post might be saved in your profile in the database.

I'm posting this without testing, but recon it should be pretty accurate ;)

    Hmmm!

As a test Arie, I just logged out and back in, then clicked on the "New reply" email notification I got for this thread and it took me to James's last post above (as expected). So I tried Pale Moon, a totally different browser I knew didn't have any cookies set for it, and without logging into WindowsBBS with PM, it still worked correctly.

And now that I think about it, that is right because the link in the email goes directly to his post above (Having To Scroll Down To Read Replies) - the first unread (for me) post.

I note on other sites, instead of a link directly to the first unread post (/#post-651175 in this case), the email notification would have a link that says something like /#new or /unread.

So, with a direct link to the first unread post in the emails, now I wonder why didn't it work for James in the first place? Either something got corrupt in the database, or perhaps he only thought he had not read it yet. More testing is required I think.

@James - what is the full link in the emails you get for "replies "?

Yea, I now tested with a new browser, and after logging in, it got me to the last unread post as well. So if it isn't happening for you I don't know what to say...

Having To Scroll Down To Read Replies

Having a little trouble deselecting the automatic URL function in this reply. The forum software treats it as a hyperlink.

Yes, that's how this software works ;)

    Use
    Code:
     [ code ] code tags [ /code ]
    (but without the space between...)

But apparently your email program is stripping out the /unread portion of the URL.

Arie - this is really odd. My emails don't have /unread appended to the links. They have the actual post # for the first unread message. For example, for your last post above, it has,
    Code:
    https://www.windowsbbs.com/threads/having-to-scroll-down-to-read-replies.110982/#post-651205
@ James - your link above just has,
    Code:
    https://www.windowsbbs.com/threads/having-to-scroll-down-to-read-replies.110982/
That is the link to the whole thread, not the first unread post.

Maybe the difference is that I don't have email notification turned on globally, but just selected it 'on' for this thread.

I don't know. I do have in Preferences "Automatically watch threads that you create or when you reply..." checked as well as the sub-option, "and receive email notifications of replies ". I guess the board software might handle those subscriptions differently. But once a notification of a reply is triggered, it seems odd to me the software would format the actual email differently.

But programming is a mystery to me anyway. That's why I stick to hardware and electron flow. :D

    Here goes...

    Code:
    https://www.windowsbbs.com/threads/having-to-scroll-down-to-read-replies.110982/

I can copy and paste the hyperlink in my browser (Firefox), and /unread is at the end of the address, but it disappears when I click on the go button.

I use Outlook 2007 for what it's worth.

It has been an ongoing issue with some users on XF, and there doesn't appear to be a fix.
