Have a 60 gig 7200 RPM drive that used to work in home built W2KPro, partitioned C = OPSYS, D= data. Was having problems with Norton AV 2003 beta & may have had a virus. I thought I had successfully removed NAV2003, but then got the blue screen. Could not get past the blue screen.

Thought I might install it in another W2K machine as a slave, and then format the 'old' C drive, then re-install W2KPro on my system & be back in business. No such luck.

My drive installed as slave on a W2KPro sys is not recognized, stops in the boot process. Cabled as cable select still failed. Whn installed on an XP system it was recognized as a disk but did not assign a drive letter.

The objective is to save the data on the drive & hopefully be able to reuse the drive. Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Do I understand this drive did work correctly untill the Norton removal?

If so we should be able to fix this!

Answer me this before we begin.

Before you switched the drive did you try safe mode?

If you did not, then put the drive back as it was and try safe mode.

There are a few steps to fix this if you can get into safe mode. I don't feel like going into them untill I know you can get into safe mode.

There are other things we can do if you can not get safe mode.

So get back. It is 11:28 Eastern I have some errands so will be in and out rest of the day. Will leave in about 1 hr.

PS it is good it was not recognized as a slave so this means you have not changed it!

While Mike is out spending money, take a look at this previous thread that may be relevant. The problem seem to be getting more common lately.

    Cheers. :)

There are some new findings. The hardfile actually booted & we managed to run diskclean & scandisk with NO errors. Both ran very slowly. Now the machien runs for about 1/2 hr & then halts with a black screen & needs a reboot. It's hubby's machine so he may need to add details, but would appreciate your additioanl comments & suggestions.

    Hi PilotGal

What about your virus scanner, is it Norton?

Please do the following in the order given!

Start by downloading and installing (but do not run) the following:

    Spyware and adware removal
    http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html

    Registry and System cleaners

    RegCleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

    EasyClean1.7 <http://gswi.com/downloads.htm>

RegScrubXP http://home.carolina.rr.com/lexunfreeware NOTE: W2K and XP only

You mentioned that it seemed to happen while removing the Norton system works. Go to link below print the page and download the removal tool. Do not run it now.

    Norton system tool removal

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...e=http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/nav&dtype=

After the above are installed boot to safe mode!

    1. Run the norton Removal tool
    2. Run Regcleaner on first page look for any refs to Norton System Works and remove
    3. While here look for any programs you thought you had removed in the past or know you do not have and remove.
    4. While still in Regcleaner go to Tools-Registry cleanup-Do them all.
    5. Run EasyClean-Unnessesary files and then Registry cleaner. DO NOT RUN DUPLICATE FILES!
    6. Run RegScrubXp-RegScrubXp finds problems, delete all found.
    7. Run Adaware select all options, and delete all it finds.
    8. Run SpyBot twice delete all it finds.

    Restart and test.

The above should make a big diff in perf and stability. If they do not fix the problem then we now have a clean slate to continue.

Thanks for the hints. Here's the results.

    1. The syst no longer boots to SAFE mode.

    2. Regcleaner freezes the syst on the 'I agree'

    3. EasyClean perfoms an illegal op when extracting.

    4. RegScrub found 92 errors which I fixed.

    5. Adawaref roze on the scan of C drive & I'm trying to re-boot now.

    6. Set/Ctrl panel shows Photoshop, but couldn't delete it as the undo file was dmaged or mnissing, so I deleted all the files. we had never used it.

    7. Rebooted clean (still took a long time) and ran Regscrub again & took out 7 iitems.

    8. Adaware froze on C;\Docs & set \....\ms\address book

    9. Ran Adaware scanning only the REG & it froze after finding 4 new reg entries.

Sure wouldappreciate other comments & solutions. The hardfile seems to run faster & boot's faster, but still some probs. Almost every time I boot it freezes somewhere along the way (usually in the progress bar on the white W2K screen.

No more for now I need to USE the sytem 2morrow.

I am glad it no longer boots to safe mode and runs better for a while.

But the inability to complete these programs is not good.

There is a bad boy here somewhere!!!!!

You did not mention the SpyBot??

Redownload the ones that don't work, sounds like they are curupted. Or you have a virus. Update the virus defs and do a full virus scan.

Did you do these in safe mode as I asked?

Be sure to do the following in safe mode THIS VERY IMPORTANT.

Run the SpyBot twice. Delete all it finds!

Then try the Adaware again. Check all configs except flpppy a: delete all it finds.

    Then try the regcleaners again.

I think if you can get thru all of these and do a scandisk the problem will be mostly corrected.

    Good morning

After coffee and rereading your message I noticed that you said Adaware locked up after finding some registry entries. This is definate proof that you have spy/adware at the very least.

SpyBot should be run first then Adaware! Then the Reg cleaners! IN SAFE MODE!

If you can complete these things then we should have enough stability to do an online virus and trojan/worm scan. i will give you the links when you finish these steps.

You still never said what virus scanner you use and if you had updated it and did a full scan.

If you want these things fixed I would do this.

Thanks for U're help. Confused as to why U think NOT booting in SAFE mode is good. I ran the indicated taks in 'real' mode as safe mdoe not available.

I think the freezes are related to the 'problem' not the prog which 'jhappens' to B running at the time. It's frozen on my 3 times this am while trying to repond to U're 1st post.

Downloaded the latest N2003 viruses & it froze during a full scan, then froze again during runnign spybot. I'll download those other progs AFTER I post this & try safe mode again.

I presume you are working on same computer that PilotGal posted about.

    YES! Safe mode is available.

Hit F8 when booting while boot progress bar is going across the bottom of screen.

Safe mode is for repair and stability. Many things that load in full mode do not load in safe mode like virus scanners firewalls special video drivers and other things.

Safe mode was meant for trouble shooting and repair.

I DO know a few things about this. Trust me.

The downloads have to be done in full mode but install and run them in safe mode.

If we have a chance to fix this computer then these are the tools we need to get thru.

There is something wrong on the computer the fact that these things are having problems is proof of that. These programs are not a problem.

    Do it!

Mike, Thanks for the encouragement BUT I also know something about this. When I say it won't boot into SAFE mode I mean it. Computer freezes while attempting to boot into SAFE mode. Wasn't trying to B silly. Yes we are both discussing ht esame 'puter.

I know there's a prob & I really appreciate U're help, but I'd not post here unless the prob was beyond me.

Puter has limped throuout the day.

Additinal info from just now. Used +/- pgms to remove the IOmega stuff. Found 2 verison of Nav NAV2003 & NAV neither had the 'remove' option available in +/- pgms so I used the Norton provide uninstall tool in Start/pgms. This removed the NAV2003 entry. Now I'll use the

    Norton system tool removal

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...supp/nav&dtype=

U revcommended even tho I did not install NAV2003 thru System works.

    Additonal info B4 I removed NAV2003.

    1. Froze running start/ctrl panel/acc/systtools/diskclean

    2. reboot ran 'till white W2K screen o blue progress tics

    3. reboot stop @ black screen B4 White W2K screen

    4. Rebott srop @ black screen with white progrees indicator 70%

    5. wait 5 min

    5. reboot to desktop where I'm wriring this & still have NAV no year in +/- pgms, so will try the remove tool after posting htis as I'm concerned I'll loose this post.

Well that was disappointing the SYM tool said no components to uninstall. So now I'll try the safe mode route & see what happens. Click NAV (no year in +/- pgs & get a removal screen more later.

Other high disk activity pgms that freeze

    Disclean

    Virus scan

So I'm in a quandry.....can't run a virus scan, can't fully remove NAV2003. Can't get into SAFE mode, so the regcleaners won't fully work.

    Ok SkyLane

No problem but when I reread the other postings it said at first it would not go into anything but safe mode.

Then PilotGal said it would etc.....

But if we cain't get to safe mode. The we will deal with full mode.

Somehow get the registry cleaners to run. If they don't extract then re download.

Maybe we should rrun SpyBot first. It may make way for the cleaners.

    Try that!

    I will stand by!
