[Resolved] Google redirect and internet time zone not accessible

Hi. Please see if you can help me with my virus/malware problems.
I have used every free scanner (virus, spyware, malware) program I can, and I still have not been able to get rid of this Google re-directer.

    Programs I have used for this/these issue(s):

    HJT
    Malwarebytes
    Spybot S&D
    Ad-Aware
    Avast
    AVG
    Housecall
    Windows Advanced System Care
    CCleaner

    Additional things I have done:

I have also removed certain files from registry (smss32, is2010 etc)
Further, I have tried to locate suspicious running processes in task manager; but there appear to be none that are suspicious.

I did have smss32 and the Internet Security 2010 issues and these "appear" to have been cleared up; that is they are not to be found anywhere in my registry. I had to manually delete some of these files from the registry as the spyware programs were not removing all files.

    The problem:

    1) I try to follow links on Google only to get re-directed to other site(s); this is on both Firefox and Internet Explorer.
    2) Not sure if it is related, but when i try to adjust the clock time (it is a bit off), I am not permitted to use the Internet Time tab as it is grayed out and thus cannot synchronize.
3)Generally, the system is running slow

I am guessing you want a HJT log; but I won't submit anything until asked. I am completely unfamiliar with DDS and combofix.

    Additional details:

The virus/malware is on a Dell laptop computer running windows xp. It is not my computer so I do not know exactly what the user was doing when it occurred nor any other particulars other than she uses social sites (facebook etc) a lot.

    Please advise,
    Snarky

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Please read this as indicated at the head of the forum and post the logs requested in this thread.
No, this is no longer sufficient - please run DDS and post both logs here.

You must appreciate that we are all volunteers here - Moderators included and are not on the BBS 24/7.

Your logs will be looked at by one of our trained malware analysts in due course - all logs are dealt with in the order in which they are posted. It may take a day or so before your logs reach the top of the pile.

You cannot expect an instant response from a BBS.

    Hi Pete,

Thank you for the reply. I really haven't had to have any posts moderated in a long time; I guess I have forgotten how long it can take. I was just worried that something was wrong on that (infected) system and the post(s) were not getting through.

If my demeanor seems at all pushy, it wasn't intended to; Please accept my apologies.
I just wanted to make sure it was getting through was all.

I really do appreciate all of you volunteers and the assistance you provide.

    cheers,

Please, make sure to disable "word wrap" in Notepad, because logs are hard to read.

Please download ComboFix from [color= "Red"]Here[/color] or [color= "#FF0000"]Here[/color] to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
NOTE. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    Download HijackThis:
    http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Installer under Version 2.0.2
[DO NOT download version 2.0.3 (beta)]
    Install, and run it.
    Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

NOTE. If you're using Vista, or 7, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administrator

Hi broni, thank you so much for the help.

I did run the Combofix program and that alone "appears" to have corrected the issues; that is, so far no redirects and the internet time is now available to be selected! Still seems a little slow to me, but its not my computer...so maybe its just a little slow to begin with?

(by the way combofix asked me if i wanted to use an updated combofix progam that was available, I said no because i wasn't told to do so...just to let you know, there does appear to be an updated one).

    Here is my combofix

Google redirect and Internet Time Zone not accessible

    Hi broni,

Just wanted to let you know that i did submit those logs an hour ago, but it takes time as I have not yet provided 10 posts on this forum.

As you will see when my log gets approved, it "appears" as though things are fixed. The system is still somewhat slow; but it may be slow anyhow seeing its only a 512mb ram system...and im not familiar with this computer.
Other than the speed, i have not yet been redirected to any other websites while using google(tested both browsers (ie & FF) on about 10-20 sites). My internet time tab is also accessible once again.

I had a few questions if you would not mind either answering them or providing me with a pertinent link...if u have the time, if not i understand.

Why were there no suspicious looking processes in the task manager even though there was obviously malware of some nature present?

What kind of things were you specifically looking for in my DDS that told you that i should run the combofix; or is Combofix kind of a present day 'cureall' for infested systems?

Lastly, I have fixed a lot of peoples computers with viruses and spyware etc. Usually, I just try a few programs combined with a scan & removal through the processes/startup and/or adjusting values in regedit (if I know what virus/files to look for). Why was this so different? Is there anywhere you can point me to get me started in answering these questions?

Thats all, thanks again; I hope my logs show up for you soon.

    Cheers

    Excellent :)

Surely another 512MB of RAM would help, but let's see how the computer is, when we're done with cleaning.

That's what the best bad guys do. They hide well, so only special tools can detect them.

When I deal with redirection, I usually run Combo first, because, most likely, it'll show me some hidden stuff running on the computer, which regular AV and antimalware programs won't see.

I believe, I answered first part of your question in my last comment.
If you're interested in a subject, your best bet are antimalware schools, lot of practice and staying on a top of the subject (new bad guys arrive daily).
As for schools, see here: http://www.uniteagainstmalware.com/schools.php

Now, I'm onto your logs. Stay tuned :)

My bad. I just edited my instructions, so, if Combofix will ever ask you to update, please do so.

    ===================================================================

    Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run [Vista users, go Start> "Start search"]
    Type in:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Note the space between the "Combofix" and the "/Uninstall "
    Restart computer.

    =================================================================

    1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

    2. Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

    1. Disable your active antivirus program.
    2. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
    3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
    4. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
    5. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      [*] Archives
      [*] Mail databases
    6. Click on My Computer under Scan.
    7. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    8. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    9. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt before clicking on the Save button. Then post it here.

    Hi Broni,

It took an awful long time to accomplish; but it is done.

    Kaspersky Scan Log

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7.0: scan report
    Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Operating system: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
    Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 7.0.26.13
Last database update: Tuesday, January 19, 2010 23:10:25
    Records in database: 3335086
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Scan settings:
scan using the following database: extended
    Scan archives: yes
    Scan e-mail databases: yes

    Scan area - My Computer:
    C:\
    D:\

    Scan statistics:
    Objects scanned: 63532
    Threats found: 0
    Infected objects found: 0
    Suspicious objects found: 0
    Scan duration: 02:06:51

No threats found. Scanned area is clean.

    Selected area has been scanned.

So it looks like the system is clean of malware, trojans and all the other good stuff. Still too slow for my tastes..it gets bogged down with browsers for instance.

I want to thank you profusely for helping me get this person's computer back to normal!

I did a bit of research and found that this was a "rootkit" that I had, Then checking my combofix report I see its name is either catchme or catchme 0.3.1398. I also found that rootkits are really rather nasty when used maliciously. Pretty scary though interesting.

Now i'll know where to come when get nominated to fix other people's computers <wink>.

    Thanks again,
    Cheers

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
    • Run JavaRa.exe (Vista users! Right click on JavaRa.exe, click Run As Administrator), pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
    • Accept any prompts.
    • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
    • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

    =================================================================

Disable TeaTimer, as it'll interfere with the cleaning process:
Right click Spybot's TeaTimer System Tray Icon.
    Click Exit Spybot-S&D Resident.
    TeaTimer closes.
NOTE. If on re-boot, Spybot inquires about registry change(s), allow it.

    ==============================================================

Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

    1. Open HijackThis.

    2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

    3. Put checkmarks next to the following HijackThis entries:

    - O20 - Winlogon Notify: !SASWinLogon - C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SASWINLO.dll [unless you have paid version]

    5. Click on Fix checked button.

    6. Restart computer.

    7. Post new HijackThis log.

Google redirect and Internet Time Zone not accessible

Broni, my friend; you did it!
The computer is working well and even faster than it was last night!

Is there something i am supposed to do to change this from [active] to [resolved] or do you guys handle that?

I had one last question...was there any way to tell where that rootkit came from? Does it leave any sort of information about the product it was hidden in or the site it came from...or even the date it entered the computer?

Again, profuse thanks and my heartfelt gratitude, not only was I able to help this lady out, I was also able to learn a great deal in the process!
You did a great job and I thank you for it!

    cheers
