How do I shut Outlook up? You know, that "shhoooosh" noise it makes on startup. I cannot find any option to get rid of it (I like a bit of peace and quiet). :(
    Can anyone help, please?

It seems to me that the noise is related to Outlook starting on Boot. Other applications may start after Outlook without the noise. It doesn't happen when starting Outlook mid-session.

If it is not from Outlook, what is it?

Which version of Outlook at you using?
Which Operating system are you using?

Control Panel->Sounds-> you should be able to tell which sounds are enabled - and turn off the one you don't want to hear.

If the sound does not occur when starting Outlook independently rather than at boot then it would be reasonable to assume that it has nothing to do with Outlook.

You will need to do some detective work - for a start I would disable all Windows sounds through Control Panel and if that mutes the sound look at the various Windows sounds enabled by default and work through them.

You know it is essential that you post your OS if you expect to receive more specific instructions as to how to make the changes outlined above. We can't even guess your OS from what you have posted so far.

We encourage all members to complete their System Specifications which help us to help you :)

Edit - Steve posted while I was typing :)

    Hi folks

My system specs (such as I know them) are now posted. For the record, I am using and Intel PC under XP with Office 2007.

I turned of the sound effects as Pete's link prescribed. I now have a silent (microsoft) computer except for the 'shoooooooosh' which persists. I cannot for the life of me figure where the noise comes from although it has always been associated with Office and boot. I have tried what Steve suggested (quite a while ago) but that has had no effect. If I had any hair left I would be tearing it out.

    Thanks

Have you tried stopping Outlook from starting at boot up time to see if it or something else is making the noise?

    Here's another suggestion ....

Search for *.wav - sound files

Right click on each in turn > Play

See if you can locate the 'shoosh' .wav file

There were 422 WAV files but I had created most of them. I tried the others, but no 'shooooosh'. I removed the Outlook shortcut from Startup - still 'shooooosh'.

    Ah-HAH!
Checked through options in Skype and unchecked 'I sign in'.
    NO 'shooooosh'.
    YAY!

    Thanks folks!

Yeah, I am glad you found it also.

I don't like anything to startup automatically when the PC is turned on. After it boots completly, the first thing I do is look and make sure my AV has started up and is running. Then and only then do I go on line.
