    Replacing disk drive

It does seem best to replace the disk drive, for safety's sake if nothing else. It's probably four years old by now.

Anyone have any suggestions on makers -- Western Digital, Seagate or Hitachi? It looks like I can get a SATA 500GB drive for about $70.

When I replace the drive, I assume that I need to do a new install of Windows, and that all programs will need to be reinstalled. Is that true? Or is there a way to transfer over the whole disk image?

    Thanks.

Well, you can try to make an image of the current drive & transfer that too the new, but that would also transfer any corrupt files that could be there.

I always use the opportunity of a new drive by doing a fresh install. Yes, I know it can be a PITA, but in the long run it'll leave you with a nice 'fresh' start :)
