You'd be surprised at what gets offered on Freecycle. I've seen folks offer good running automobiles that used to belong to previous estates. Practically brand-new appliances that only needed minor repairs, like-new furniture, Hi-Fi gear, and computer parts.

    The list is endless.

It does look interesting, though you would think people would remove the ads once the items are gone.

The ads, or postings, are not removed. Rather, when an item is picked up, the giver posts a "taken" message. The format of posted items look similar to something you would see at this forum and others.

Posted titles are usually written as...

    • Offer:
    • Taken:
    • Wanted:
    • Received:

In addition, if you are accepted as a member, you will receive daily emails from the forum moderators with that day's listings with links to respond to the poster of an offered or wanted item. No outsiders can view any postings unless the forum rules allow it.

I noticed that Costco was clearing out their display models, so I bought a Samsung T24C550ND for $105 (I paid $100 for my NEC CRT monitor 14 years ago, and this one is much lighter). It takes a little getting used to, as I went from a 16" to a 24 ", and I can't view the whole screen without moving my eyes from side to side. I also notice that the lettering doesn't look quite as sharp as on the smaller screen, but that may be my eyesight. I used ClearType and got it as good as I can get it. The HD movies look amazing, but my older videos aren't as sharp as before. Would it help to lower the screen resolution when viewing older videos?
Since it is also a television, I'll add a digital converter box to my external antenna feed, this weekend, and see how that works. I'm guessing the sound will be coming from the monitor rather than my computer, so the sound quality will drop.

No. LCD monitors have a "native resolution" they are optimized for and for 24" inch widescreens, that is typically 1,920 x 1,200 for 16:10 monitors and 1,920 x 1,080 for 16:9. Your Samsung should be set to 1,920 x 1,200.

Your older videos probably look less sharp simply because the new monitor reveals the lessor qualities of the older recordings.

I have two 22" widescreens which create a Desktop nearly 38 inches wide (discounting the bezels). So I understand the side to side issue. But do note that it is pretty easy to sit too close to a computer monitor. And because the picture elements (pixels) on an LCD monitor are square shaped, sitting too close can make the image "appear" less sharp. You may want to try moving your monitor (or keyboard, mouse and chair) back few inches.

You might also play with font sizes. Pressing Ctrl + and Ctrl - will increase and decrease font sizes accordingly.

My 24" to 30" monitors are usually at least arms length away with the top of the monitors at about eyebrow level. With a stacked six monitor setup, (3 wide x 2 high) the topmost monitors are at roughly head level.

Native resolution is 1920 X 1080 on this monitor and is the highest possible setting.

Moving back makes sense for a young guy, but when the focal length of your glasses is set at a particular distance, moving closer or further only makes the image appear fuzzier. I have found the font size to help some.

Would eyebrows at the top of the screen be the best location? I was thinking of raising the monitor so my eyes were at the center of the screen. Right not, my eyes are about 3/4" above the screen. It would be nice if there was a tilt on this monitor mount.

My mistake. Yes, 1920 X 1080 is correct for this monitor and that is what it should be set to.
