I suddenly started getting an error messge from Windows Internet Explorer telling me that I was trying to find an Internet address that cannot be found. I have no idea what this address refers to and have no recollection of trying to get to it.
This message appears literally every ten seconds and is impossible to delete.
    Can someone help me here?

    Thanks,
    Lochinvar

The actual error message (including address if available) may help...

Better head to the Malware section and read the sticky and go from there.

Thinking that too MrBill but it could simply be some addon that's lost touch with homebase, hence the request for the error/address.

The intensely annoying error message seems to have dried up and hasn't appeared recently.
If it happens again I'll send the actual wording.
Thanks everyone for your comments. Hopefully I won't see it again.

It could come from several things:

    1. malware
    2. antivirus or other program attempting to auto update
    3. p2p program can't connect, e.g. bittorrent, messenger, skype, etc.

For starters, and just as a precaution:

Read this post, then post the requested log(s) in the Malware and Virus Removal forum.

Thank you Tony for your helpful reply. I read the memo you suggested. Useful.
I already have SuperAntiSpyware, Norton360 and MacAfee, plus at least a little commonsense on my part in not opening e-mails whose senders I don't recognize.
The annoying error message has now quit with no indication of its origin.
Thank you all for your interest and comments
Can this thread now be flagged as satisfactorily completed?

Before you close it, I see a real problem. Norton360 and McAfee. You should not run more than 1 Anti-Virus program on your PC at anytime. They will conflict with one another.

Agreed. It's possible he's referring to a McAfee utility scanner, not the entire AV app.

I had written a brief reply to both Bill and Tony but for some inexplicable reason (my experience with computers is full of 'inexplicable reasons'!) it disappeared before being posted. I won't bother to try and recreate it.
I have actually now uninstalled the whole McAfee program which wasn't doing too much for me anyway.
I had already flagged this thread as completed. The problem resolved itself. Thank you for your comments and advice.
Should I flag this message as a part of the completed thread?

You're fine Lochinvar, Bill & Tony raised an additional issue which you've since resolved.

Let us know if the problem re-occurs but for now you're done.

Just to be clear you can't close a thread here only mark it resolved, that doesn't mean you won't get additional replies only that your (original) problem is over.

Wildfire, sorry to say that the error message has returned. It appeared last night when I was using Interent Explorer 9 (which I think is still Beta).
Here is what the msg says:

.../Users//AppData/LocalLow/Conduit/Community%20Alerts/Dialogs/AppNotificationDial...Make sure the path or Internet address is correct

I don't even begin to understand what it is trying to tell me!

Can anybody help me rid myself of this nagging beast?

Wildfire, when I clicked on the link in your message I got a warning from BBS that this might be an unprotected site. I got he feeling it was saying Don't go there! Although I may be wrong.
Anyway, I went there and to ask a question in the Forum I have to give my email and passowrd. I feel a bit nervous about that, frankly. I do NOT want to appear on soemone's junk mail list!
    Am I over-reacting?

Possibly, but better to be safe than sorry (I think they're just asking you to register to their forum) ie you'll need an email but do not use the same password.

Let me do a little research first (I only gave it a cursory glance) and I'll get back to you with more information shortly.

    Hi Lochinvar,

Carry on with my previous instructions... You'll need to sign up to their forum to post. As I said do not use the same password as your email account.

The message you received from WindowsBBS is standard for any links that go offsite, eg www.microsoft.com will bring up the same.

IE 9 is not BETA. It hasn't been for months. The message you get when you click on a link is normal in this Windowsbbs forums.
