    nowhit10... even with a dial- up connection you need some basic level of protection to control which applications have the right to send data from your computer... the Win XP firewall only protects against incoming traffic.

    if you want some thing which works well with Win XP, doesn't use much in the way of resources and is free, try using the Tiny Personal Firewall http://www.tinysoftware.com/home/tiny along with the XP firewall.

    Tiny is very easy to set up and use... after installation whenever an application tries to use the internet you are asked to permit or deny access... once set, an encrypted MD5 signature for that app is stored and it never has to ask again unless you update or change that particular app.

    I used Tiny initially with XP's firewall and liked its ease of use and stability until a stable version of Outpost firewall was available.:)
