    Dennis ...

Piro hasn't updated Tabbrowser Extensions (TBE) since 13 March 06, and I don't think he's likely to. When I started playing with Bon Echo (FF 2.0), I reluctantly switched to Tab Mix Plus (TMP)'s Dev-Build, which has many (not all, unfortunately) of TBE's features. If you use some of the scripts available for the Stylish extension, though, it's possible to get TMP to approximate TBE fairly closely.

Also, TMP works very nicely with Minefield (FF 3.0a1).

    Ackerberg ...

The Mozilla servers are overloaded right now, and I can't find a link. Send me a private message with your email address, and I'll attach the .zip file to a reply.

I downloaded the new version but it has not saved any of my bookmarks, favorites etc. It looks the same so obviously my old settings have been saved somewhere but I have no clue where (I am an idiot when it comes to computers!). I tried looking at profiles to see if there was more than 1 but there wasn't. How can I get everything back? I want it back the way it was, the tabs aren't even working right.
Any help would be appreciated but very basic please, the help I got elsewhere was too complicated.

Welcome to the Forum, miss chris!

    miss chris,

It would be helpful if you could furnish us with more information:

Did you install Firefox 2.0 over an existing version
    If so what version?

Your Profile information is located here for Windows XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.profilename

Is there more than one xxxxxxxx.profilename folder?

In the profile name folder, you should see your Bookmarks file:
    bookmarks.html - Bookmarks

Let us know what you find.

Yes I did install over another version but I don't know what version it was.
I'm not even sure if I'm looking in the right place, probably not but from what I could see the only profile was the new version with nothing in it. I didn't see abook.mab anywhere. Sorry I'm not helping much, can I just uninstall it and reinstall the old version or will that delete everything completely?
The tabbed browsing isn't working neither is history.

    miss chris,

The correct place to look for Profiles is here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.profilename

As an example, the file will be similar to this:
    136vns93.misschris

With Windows XP, you first must "unhide" the files:

The files are hidden by default.
    To see hidden files:
    1. On the Tools menu in Windows Explorer, click Folder Options
    2. Click the View tab
    3. Under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
    4. Disable "Hide File Extensions for Known Files. "
    5. Click OK.

To search for files in the Application Data folder, go to Start | Search.
Under More Advanced Options select Search system folders, Search
Hidden Files and folders, and Search subfolders.

Uninstalling Firefox has no effect on the Profile. So you would be spinning your wheels to uninstall.

    Do this for me:

    Close Firefox
Click on Start | Programs | Mozilla Firefox | Profile Manager
Is there more than one Profile listed
If so, which one is the default Profile, i.e., the original Profile?

Firefox is a browser only, so it would not have an abook.mab, which belongs to mail.

Someone else told me to uninstall + reinstall after deleting a file and now it seems to be working. Thank you for the help. Most of the extensions are not compatible yet but that will come with time I'm sure.

    Which file?
As for the extentions, all which I have, work when I use the nightly Tester or MR Tech Local Install extentions, as mentioned earlier by JSS3rd. Link to MR Tech Local Install is: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/421/

    Clif,

I'm glad you're back, and hope that your recovery is speedy. Westside is also recovering from bypass surgery...

While we're on the topic of 2.0, how will automatic updates handle it? I recently decided to allow Mozilla the right to update itself on my laptop, but I am still running 1.5.x. Do the main version number jumps not get updated automatically? Or do they stagger them in some way shape or form, so that their servers don't get overloaded? Couldn't find anything on Mozillazine about this.

    Paul,

It appears that a new Firefox 1.5.0.8 will be released Nov. 1, for the sole purpose of being able to use the Update Manager to update from 1.5.0.8 to Version 2.0, or perhaps 2.0.1. You can read more here, and here.

I thought I'd add my comments having also recently upgraded to version 2.0. Most of my extensions transferred over fine. The ones I use most of the time (Web Developer, Html Validator, IE Tab, PDF Download) are all fine.

I thought at first the spell checker hadn't been included and then I found the install Dictionary option and hey presto, I now have in line spelling (and very nice too).

I've also upgraded to IE7 and it is interesting to compare the two. IE7 is now a reasonable alternative to Firefox I think. It looks to me that the IE developers have used Firefox as a template for a lot of enhancements. The Developer Tool Bar add-in is very similar to Firefox Web Developer externsion.

I prefer Firefox, but previously not using IE6 has been a no brainer. The choice was between Firefox and Opera. I think there are now three browser to seriously consider, and IE7 is not far off the back of the other two. I'd say IE7 is roughly equivalent to Firefox 1.0, which is a huge improvement over IE6.

The IE tab in Firefox appear to work fine with IE7 on the PC, so I'm still able to easily flip between the two rendering engines.

So in summary, thumbs up for Firefox 2.

I agree with Reggie, except for his assessment of IE7 ... the installation procedure is lengthy and intrusive, requiring that anti-virus and spyware protection be temporarily disabled, a validation check for a legal copy of Windows, and finally, a reboot. Firefox, on the other hand, installs in minutes, even with a clean install.

Personally, I find IE7 ugly and difficult to configure, with klutzy tabs. After a couple of hours struggling with it, I uninstalled it, and won't reinstall it. I only need to use IE when a page displays so badly in FF as to be unreadable, and IE6 (called by FF's IE View extension), is fine for viewing a single page.

For those interested, CNet's comparison of IE7 and FF2.0 is worth reading.

Actually, I would have liked FF 1.0 more than IE7. It has more of what I want--a password manager, and extensions like Send to my Gmail. Admittedly IE7 has more tabs options, but for better or worse, I'm just fine with the tab options of FF and I really don't see myself ever using IE7s greater functionality.

The searchbar of IE7 still doesn't let me do a site search or image/groups search, like I can with my Googlebar Lite with FF.
And the UI of IE7 is noticeably worse than IE6. The toolbar icons are spread out over 4 separate places--upper and lower left and right sides of the toolbar. It will take me weeks to stop looking for the Stop and Reload buttons on the left side of the browser window.

On the whole, however, I do see IE7 as a big step forward for MS. And they are saying that they won't wait another 5 years for the next update (to IE8).

"Just download and run the 2.0 EXE. It's ok to overwrite your 1.5.0.7 ver. "

I saw the above at one of the links Ramona provided. Double checking -- is this o.k. to do on top of 1.5.0.7? Or is it best to wait for the auto update?

Yes, the installation process is far too long. However, this is MS software so bloatware.

Yes, I agree again. It is ugly compared with Firefox. I hate the fact that you can't move the menu bars around.

I guess what I'm saying is that I was surprised how much I liked about IE7. It's still the third best browser, but its now a serious alternative. IE6 wasn't.

With my technical hat on, I'd recommend you install IE7. If you have Firefox with the IE Tab extension, you can use IE7 far better rendering engine (far better than IE6) with Firefox's better user interface. There are still IE only website out there, and I'd feel a lot safe viewing them via an IE7 engine than an IE6 engine. If you have IE Tab extension, you can avoid using the IE Graphical User Interface for these sites.
