This is a real mystery, since we are dealing with Flash files, and IE Tab is installed, but I was not using it. However, the Video did not show up, today, and when I disabled, not uninstalled, IE Tab, the Videos appeared.
when I tried to view using the IE option, I got two separate errors. If I clicked on the small picture shortcut, I got, immediately, that the video had times out, and, to make sure that there was no running Flash. In the Firefox mode, I got a blank screen, and that's it. If I clicked on Live Videos I got a streaming error.
Of course, there was no problem viewing the Videos on IE.
Well, I have done too many tests, and I can do without CNN on my FF3.0.

I have to use FF2 for sites that need flash and FF3 for all the others that don't need flash.
I'm using the portable versions of both.

I do this to get it working...

Using FF3 I click on one of the video thumbnails on the CNN website and the black video player screen appears and it says it's 'loading ". It doesn't.

So, I scroll down a bit and click on 'Most Popular', which opens a row of thumbnails beneath it. Click on one of those and the thumbnails open along the right side. Click on one of those and it plays. Smooth programming, eh?

Well here is some more info to work with.....

I took my thumbdrive and went home and uninstalled my flash and reinstalled it.... only then would my FF3 on my thumbdrive work...

HOWEVER.... now that I'm back at work where I don't have admininstrator privilages.. it will not work.

But my FF2 does work here at work just fine?

For some reason the flash is not imbedded in the program itself "FF3" or my work computer will not allow the newer version to run.... but that doesn't make sense either.. because when I installed the latest version at home.. it also updated my FF2?.....

Both FF2 and FF3 are on my thumbdrive and only FF2 will run the flash while at work.

Can someone who understands the inner workings of Firefox figure that one out?

    windstrings,

What does your IS person at work say about this? If you are on a network/LAN then wouldn't the Admin. have to update Flash?

Yep... and although they have no problems with running "some" software, they won't update for the sake of one person and open the risk of so many other things then not being updated.... they do everything global or nothing.

I doubt they have any interest in fixing my thumbdrive browser when they have their own browser... but I not only hate IE, I am used to all the buttons and features of FF and don't want to go back... not even at work.

Some ITs are more open minded than others. I have been retired for nearly six years, and the top IT person wanted to learn about Netscape/Mozilla, etc. and, I often, got phone calls to trouble shoot. It can a problem. One has to go with the flow, and do some underground work.
I am using FF3.0.1 portable, and I have had no problem with CNN videos.
May be you need a bare bones program!

Some of the IT peoples hands are tied.. they know their stuff it majorly antiquated but can do nothing about it.... so they understand when folks need to run more modern stuff and don't mind as local as it stays on the local computer and doesn't jeopardize the network in any way.
I know most of them by name :>

I have a folder which goes back to a late Mozilla, and was used by other Firefox versions. All programs have it, in one form or other, and I am sure that not all .dll files are needed. But 3.0.1 portable has all the .dlls.
The portable plugins are in this path: C:\FFportable\FirefoxPortable\App\firefox\plugins
The npturnmed.dll was produced by installing the wmfirefoxplugin3.1.exe file.
That file is the same version as that used by 2.x.
Why did I have to reinstall file beats me. I can see video with portable.

    westside,
    Thanks for the information.
I have been following this post for some time and agree that there are problems with FF 3.0.1 and cnn videos. Particularly if you have ietab installed. As indicated above, disabling ietab seems to clear the problem, as does clearing the cache and reloading the page though I can se no connection between cache and ietab.
windstrings problems with portable FF really has me stumped. So much so that I instlled FF portable to a thumb drive and tried to replicate it. The same basic problems exhist with ietab.
FF will try and ferret out the *.dll files, looking in the install folder and if it does not find them there will look in the system registry PLID file location.
In MY thumb/protable they are located in:
    L:\FF_Portable\FirefoxPortable\Data\plugins\

It is very hard to replicate the problem without re configuring my machine with regards to permisions and such. but if it works on 2.0 and 3.0.1 is confgured the same way, then darn it , it should work.

    windstrings,
    This is really bugging me.
Can you please do the following:
    1. start Portable FF 3.0.1
    2. In location bar enter "about: config" (no spaces) edited
    2. In filter bar, enter "plugin.expose_full_path" without quotes.
    4. If value = "false ", right click and select "toggle" to = "true "
    close
    5. In location bar enter:
    about: plugins (no spaces)
    6. For "Turner Media Plugin 1.0.0.10 "
What does it say for the:
    File name:=
    6. For "Shockwave Flash "
    What does it say for:
    File name: =

    Please post back - thanks

    regards:captjlddavis

    Capt.,
I could not predict what would have happened. However, my Firefox portable did not have any add-ons, and it played CNN movies. I installed IE Tab, and though not being used, it caused movies to not be played.
However, with IE Tab present, and using the IE engine movies played, and the entire page had a different look.
If I disabled (not uninstalled) IE Tab, in the Add-on manager, and used the Firefox engine, movies played.
about config showed "plugin.expose_full_path" with value "false ", in all cases, whether it played or not.
In about: plugins: Turner Media Plugin 1.0.0.10 indicated video/x-turner-wmv,
    pipeline, enabled
Shockwave Flash: had two application types: application/x-shockwave, swf, yes
    and futuresplash, sfl, yes.
So far, I can see that the mere presence of IE Tab enabled causes problems.
But there is no problem, with the IE engine.
At this point, I cannot see any blame to Firefox, but more to the site, and, maybe something with IE Tab.

    westside,
Thanks. I agree - it is with the site and with IEtab......perhaps somethng with activex control ?

With "expose full path....= true, it will show the full path to the plugin that you are using. ie if it is using the *.dll from the local Plugin directory in the local program OR searching for and using the *.dll from the Shockwave install directory. That is what I am trying to find out from "windstrings ".

Hopefully windstrings will post his settings. I can't figure out why,at work, it works for him in 2.0.* and NOT in 3.0.1 - unless the system at work for him is set NOT to allow 3.0.1 to access the internet. If that is the case, he will have to get them to allow 3.0.1 net access.

Changing to false, I get the entire path to the plugins folder of the program which I use. In this case, Firefox portable.

    westside,

    That does not make sense.....
plugin.expose_full_path is default set to "false" and shows only the file name in about:plugins - setting it to = True will show the full path.

    plugin. expose_full_path Boolean
True: In about:plugins and navigator.plugins, reveal the full path to plugin files
False (default): Show only the plugin filename

thanks for checking out this problem.
I don't have IE tab installed, but I do have IE View installed... nevertheless, I don't understand what you want me to do after I tell it to expose full path of plugin... you say "if value - False ".. what value?... there is a whole page of stuff? which specifically am I supposed to be focusing on?

OK.. I figured out what your saying.. I'm not used to playing around in there...
    1. mine was set to false.. I toggled it to true.
    2. I couldn't find "Turner Media Plugin 1.0.0.10 " anywhere... not even "Turner Media Plugin "
    3. I don't have shockwave either at all... I "m going to look at my FF2 to see if it has those... keep in mind, I "m at work right now on the problem machine where FF3 won't do flash but FF2 will.

    Edited:....
Ok.. I checked out my FF2
    1. the value was also false, I changed it to true,
    2. then when I looked at plugins, I do have shockwave flash 9.0r124 installed as well as future splash.

I guess I will have to see if I can add shockwave as a plugin when get home to my administrated computer.

Funny, in FF2 shockwave is not listed as a plugin when you go to Tools ---> addons... Does that mean it was there by default when I installed FF2?.. if not, where did it come from and why can't FF3 get it the same way?

Good- now we are on the same page.
You toggled it to = true
When I said "close" i was refering to the "about:config" window/tab, not the program.
    My BAD....

If FF is not running, then start FF portable 3.0.1.

proceed with step 5 and both of the steps 6's

You should have a list of ALL plugins in use - showing the FULL pathe to the plugin *.dll that you are using.

THAT is the info I would like to see: You can Highlite the File Name info with the mouse and copy, paste into your reply.

Thanks - sorry for any confusion

    regards:captjlddavis
