This link will give you an idea of the turmoil people in Christchurch (South Island New Zealand) have been enduring since September. Houses/Businessses destroyed and it's still continueing.

They have had up to date 4137 tremors. All they want for the NEW Year is for the land to stay still. Neil.

The biggest problem is that these tremors have occurred at night as well and the Cantabs can't sleep easy and haven't been able to since September.

Fortunately there has not been any loss of life so far, but we thought it would stop before now (aftershocks) but there seems to no end to it.

Seismologists say that the aftershocks could continue for another 12 months!

I've never experienced an earthquake or a tremor. I'm not sure I can even imagine what it must be like. I am sure it is frightening.

Just got an e-mail from my friend and he said that they are now saying that they are not aftershocks. They are actually earthquakes again. He had one last night and said that he ran out in the yard to be safe and forgot that he just had on his drawers and a tee shirt. He says that this time of the year, that is how he always sleeps. He said he has got to go to a shelter for a couple of days as he had some damage to his house this time.

I take it you are referring to Marty (martymas). I was wondering why he hasn't posted about this shaker at BT.

Well the latest quake count as at 10.00am NZ (daylight saving time) 21/01/11 is 4459. That's another 322 since I first Posted.
If you're interested in feeling a quake Mitch, Christchurch is the place to visit.

Locals are trying to carry on as normal but with every new quake there is ongoing damage.

Buildings that were assessed for damage and passed as habitable previously, have now got on the list and some have been condemned.

At least we haven't got the flooding that has occurred in Australia. What's next in this world turmoil? Cheers for the New Year. Neil.

A few years ago (2002) we had an earthquake in the English Midlands. I woke up to see my walls moving!

It was pretty weird at the time. There was at least one aftershock. They are quite rare in the UK though. This one was 4.7 on the Richter Scale. Reputedly it could be felt up to 300 kilometres away.

Yes earthquakes are a weird phenomenon. They can be felt quite considerable distances from the epicentre 200-300kms some times.

I've felt many earthquakes in my lifetime but I still wouldn't fancy living in Christchurch for the next couple of years. Neil.;)

The South Island has just endured another two heavy quakes today. 1st one occurred at 9.16am NZDST and the 2nd at 12.51pm.
The 2nd quake was 6.3 on the Richter scale and they have enormous devastation and one reported loss of life so far.
Liquifaction is occuring everywhere and properties that did not get damaged in September, have now been severely damaged.
The 6.3 quake has been felt nearly 1000km away! Neil.

We had one in the Gulf of Mexico below Alabama last week.

A 3.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Gulf of Mexico, gulf coast and surrounding area on 2/18/2011 around 5pm. Dauphin Island is about 17 miles from the center of the earthquake that struck the gulf coast area Friday evening.

Further news gives 65 dead and there may be more. Heavy aftershocks are hampering search crews. This is really bad news on top of the Pike River mining disaster where 29 lives were lost.Neil.

Just got a couple of e-mails from my friend in NZ. He didn't mention anything. Maybe getting used to them like aftershocks.

Mr.Bill, your friend must be out of town. This has been on radio & TV since 1.00pm today. Parts of Lyttleton Port have been demolished and the city of Christchurch has been closed by Police and Army.
Over 2 thousand people are bedding down in a huge Marquee in Hagley Park as they can't get to their homes.
The 5 storey CTV Building collapsed and is still burning with people trapped inside the rubble. They are communicating with the searchers by cellphones and rescuers will be working all night to save them.
I'm currently watching the TV as I write this. Neil.
