Apologies if I am in the wrong forum
Today I received the BBS Forum Newsletter June 2010 and I took advantage of the free download of the Acronis Drive Monitor and used it.
I now find that I have a hard drive on the point of failure, I already have the Acronis back up system and so do have a copy on an external hard drive of my disc image.
I would like to purchase a new hard drive and fit it myself but do not know how to copy my operating system and all information I have saved to a new disc before putting it in my computer.
Have tried looking through BBS past leads and information but cannot find anything which would guide me through the process. Mike Devon

Although you have an image of the hard drive the simplest method is to use Acronis to clone the existing drive to your new drive. Clearly this involves installing the new drive alongside the existing drive.

See the Acronis Help file re. cloning. A painless operation which I carried out last week when installing a 1Tb drive to replace a slower 500 Gb drive from which I was running Win 7 Pro x64..

Once done make a new image of the cloned drive.

You might like to get a second opinion on the drive using the drive manufacturer's disk diagnostic software (DOS version - boot from CD) .....

On the subject of cloning I replaced my 500 Gb OS drive with a speedier 1 Tb drive last week and used the clone facility in Acronis True Image Home - worked like a charm - swift and painless :)

    PeteC,
Just to check I'm on the right track, have taken the side off, seems to be plenty of slots to put a new hard drive in, I noticed that the wide cable that connected the present hard drive to the main board had half way along it a folded up connection block not being used, is this where I would connect a new hard drive to?
My present hard drive is a Maxtor Diamond 80GB 7200RPM EIDE UDMA 133, I would like to replace it with a 500GB or bigger, there are so many hard drives for sale with different details listed that I'm not sure what to go for, what I need is one that I know will fit and work with the main board in this computer, would appreciate any suggestions. Mike Devon

    Mike

It appears that you have an INTEL CORPORATION MODEL D101GGC motherboard .....

    http://downloadmirror.intel.com/15113/eng/D101GGC_ProductGuide_English.pdf

Note: Although you have filled in your System Details you have not completed the final step to have them show under your name at the left of your posts ......

    http://www.windowsbbs.com/adding_system_specifications.html

Your current hard drive is EIDE or PATA (Parallel ATA) - most current drives are SATA (Serial ATA) and EIDE drives are hard to come by.

Given your posted experience I suggest you stick with an EIDE drive as installing a SATA drive can be tricky in terms of drivers (your motherboard does support SATA).

On that basis you have a limited choice of drives - I use Dabs.com for all my computer parts and this is what they have on offer .....

    http://www.dabs.com/category/compon...l-hard-drives/11154-52420000-42730000#filters

As you will see the largest available is 500 Gb and would suit your requirements.
Yes - fortuitously the only drive available from Dabs is Western Digital and the URL posted by Matt fits the bill perfectly ....

Good luck - feel free to post back as often as you like :)
