the reason why I did not want to reinstall XP:

    1) have to get all the stuff from Win98SE and 2000 working again, mostly games, thus have to go though regedit... such a hassle.

    2) the D: drive has all the games on it anyways (which both win98SE and win2000 play) so I cannot just reformat D:, but have to save its data

at any rate, copying the drive to another then reformaiing and then copying back _mostly_ worked... the anti virus (Avast Home, free edition) had to be uninstalled and reinstalled and the firewall(Zone Alarm personal free edition) lost its list of "allow access to internet" programs, lastly the .dll LegitCheckControl.dll had to get updated (via IE's activeX stuff) but I think it needing to be updated is because MS updated the .dll, just coincidence that it happened today....

the only minor head scrather I had was to make sure that there was no page file (i.e. swap file) active on drive d: (under windows 2000) so that the drive could get formated.... so now the drive is formatted NTFS with 4K clusters (before it was 512 byte clusters) weather or not my BSOD's will not magically disappear I will see over the next week or so....

Thanks for the explanation, Bill. I have to digest this and try the procedure on one of my spare hard disks (when time permits). There is nothing like "hands on" for understanding things.

kRogue, May I suggest that next time you consider using XXCLONE to move your bootable drive (or any other drive) around. It doesn't care about file system storage types, it just goes to work and gets the job done. It free! It's user friendly! It works!

Of course you won't learn any of the convoluted steps that are necessary to accomplish this manuver but do you really need that? :) I always find that when doing something out of the mainstream using MS tools, I get too involved at a level that makes my head throb. :)
