Well got the laptop back and it is up and running. It doesn't appear to ahve resolved the issue. The first 20 mins taht the computer was on, it was fine, I think I heard the fan once or twice for a min or so. But after that, the fan has been on for several minutes at a time, and then will take short breaks before coming back on.

One thing that I'm seeing now, staring at SIW, is that the temperature will be in the low 130s (F), with no fan running. Then, SIW will report the temperature rising in a few seconds, to teh low 140s, and then within a few more seconds, the fan will turn on. Honestly the bottom of the laptop doesn't feel that hot at all--room temperature, really. I'm surprised that the laptop would jump that high in temperature, so suddenly. I was worried that perhaps I had a bug in SIW, but the last free version (I just installed it) is giving me the same readings.

The guy at the shop said that sometimes, a core will report a higher temperature than is teh case, causing the fan to go on, even though the temprature is really not that hot.

Unless there is something else I can try at home, I think its time to send it to Toshiba. I'm not sure how long they will take, but during a summer break would be teh best time to have it away from the house....

Which sounds normal to me. Especially for notebooks where battery runtimes are important, you don't want the fan running full speed if the interior temps are still fine.

Sometimes? I would say all the time. The CPU fan, if variable, is always controlled by the CPU temperature, not the case or system temps.

As far as temps rising fast, that too is normal because the CPU can go from 0 to 100% utilize in one clock cycle too. This is exactly why you should never run a CPU without proper cooling properly mounted - even for a second.

Again, sounds normal to me. And 140°F is 60°C. While warm, that is not hot.

What are your ambient (room temps)? Is the notebook on a cooling pad or flat hard surface? The underside of the notebook is not any test for heat. There is a lot of distance between the CPU and the underside of the notebook case, and heat is attempting to rise further away. So while a hot bottom indicates some heat, a cool bottom does not mean all else is cool.
