Perhaps I am weird, but I am not much concerned with spyware: what if XYZ, Inc. in CA will know that I visit this or any other site? They will adjust their selling policy using my habits as a part of their statistics. Perhaps, that will increase their profit margin or will lower the price of their product. I do not sell drugs on the Net and do not deal in child pornography. What should I be afraid of? I do have AdAware and use it when I remember. Every time I see "Doubleclickâ€. Any idea what it is?
As far as uninstall: even if Windows cannot do it normally (in Control Panel), you can always do it in DOS typing DELTREE\C\Program Files\ProgramName. DOS is a hassle in Me, but you rarely have to do it. Then type program’s name in Registry "˜Find’ and delete it manually. A good Registry or Regcleaner should be able to do it automatically.
How do you use SFC, Deloris or where can I read about it?

    yurka,

Give me a little time to get some information together. I probably don't use SFC in quite the same way as most people, but each of us has our own way of doing things that makes sense to us. :)

I will look for some info on the internet & if I can't find any, I will be happy to tell you my own way of using it, which is rather involved, but provides almost all of the information I need for knowing what was on my computer before an installation & what's on it afterwards. And what files need to be found & deleted, or restored to the previous, or just plain put back if a program I installed deleted something that another program possibly was using before I installed it, after an uninstall becomes necessary.

Will get back to you soon.

    Deloris.

    I'm back.

This is for windows 98. I have no idea about 2000, or XP because I don't have them.

Click on this link & it should take you to the Google search page for SFC. There are many links on this page, & possibly following pages, where you can go read about SFC.

    www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=System+File+Checker&btnG=Google+Search

I suggest reading the "Description of the System File Checker Tool (Sfc.exe)" first, then "Windows 98, Getting Started With SFC "

Those two give a basic idea of what it does & then go read whatever ones you want to from that point on. All are good sources.

Naturally, I have chosen to use SFC in a much different manner than most of these articles suggest. I don't just blindly restore a file because it says so & so about it. I have refined my way of using the program to suit my specific needs & wants, which works fine for me. I think most people wind up doing that sort of thing after they tinker with it for awhile. :)

If you are still not quite sure what to do, I will try to help further if I can.

    Deloris.

    Deloris,
it turned out that M$ does not put SFC into Me. I went to M$ site and they explained that Me is so perfect that it does not need one (he-he).
I DL Blabster and… there is no installation. You can run it from your desktop, if you wish. There are only 5-6 files (that can be deleted, I guess). It was better than WinMX, but only marginally: it DLed 4 out of 20+ files it found. It may find more or less every time you type in the same name into Search window. My Adware did not find any spyware associated with it, but sometimes (!) there is an ad window that pops up when I open it.

    :D

I didn't know if ME had SFC or not. So ME is so perfect it doesn't need it? OK, if they say so. :)

I can't conceive of not needing "something" that tells you what a program did or didn't do to your computer. But then again, I guess I am more the hands on type, and don't believe there is such a thing as perfection in this world, especially not in Windows OS's. :D

Well blubster would be OK with me too, except for that part about it using part of your system resources & bandwidth even when your not downloading or getting downloaded from. That still sounds suspect to me. Maybe I am just the suspicious type. I just know I don't want my putter being used by anyone but me for anything that I am not a part of if I can help it. :)

Actually, they explain the reason. Perhaps, you can understand it. I even haven’t finished reading: I am like that lady who drives a VW Beetle: if you told her that there is a spare engine in her trunk, she’d believe you. As long as a PC works, I am happy.
One guy who does a lot of digging out in PC land, told me that M$ abandoned Me and stopped its support, so bad the OS is. I find it hard to believe:
    1. Would be a bad PR policy.
    2. They have a lot of support info on their website.
    3. SE or 2000 Pro may be better, but I do not design satellites and I think that it is a decent OS: since 9/00 it never crashed and only once I could not start my PC in Regular Mode, only in Safe. To this day I suspect a virus or something.
I do not think it runs continuously.
I DLed it and next day double-clicked it to install. To my surprise, it opened right away, without usual installation wizard. It placed an icon on my desktop, but not in Systray. My resources run in low 90s-high 80s, which is good enough for me. It does not even have a line in startup menu "“ msconfig.
It is similar to favtool.exe (a small proggy that converts Favorites to Bookmars or vice versa). It also DLs to your PC and if you need it, you can use it right away, no installation required. Neither one in present in Explorer's Program Files.
