Again I believe we are not understanding each other.

In 95 and 98 there are three ways of getting to DOS from the HD.. And each one has different capabilities.

1-- The Command Prompt only from the F8 Menu. This has full capabilities and may depend somewhat on what is in the Config.sys and Autoexec, bat. ( CDROM & Mouse etc. ) This is not the MS DOS Mode. And none of Windows is running. Cntrl-Alt-Del can saftely be used here.

2-- The MS DOS MODE which is arrived at from start/run Re-start in MS DOS Mode. Again what can be done here ( CDROM, MOUSE and Audio etc. ) may depend on what is in the Config.sys, Autoexec.bat and/or the DOSSTART.bat. And here PART of Windows is running. That is why it needs EXIT to get out of it properly. Cntrl-Alt-Del here can produce some not so nice results. In fact I have stupidly and carelessly done that and then wondered why the machine would not boot.

And depending on how the .PIF file for a program is setup up it may produce a DUAL BOOT setup. And if anything goes wrong here it can ( and has ) completley hung up a system to the point neither one would work.

3--Is the MS DOS PROMPT ( Window ) This is limited. And the FULL Windows is running. And requires EXIT to get out of it.

Therefore when we speak of using DOS we need to CLARIFY CLEARLY how we get to ( or got to ) IT. Again Each one is different. And each one may produce different results.

Now if you want a good clean un-adulterated DOS, boot to the Win98 Startup disk. It does not even know that Windows even exists.

DOS is one of several reasons I do not like Windows ME. It does not have the same Rock Soild DOS capabilities that 95 & 98 do.

Also a mistake that even I myself make. When we say Win95 that may not be enough. WHICH VERSION ? The original 95, 95a ( upgraded and/or patched 95 ) or 95b ( OSR2 Non-Retail ). Again every one is different. Or at least has some different version of files. IF I remember correctly 95b was the only one to have the USB support.

95b ( OSR2 ) has a different verison of DOS also. It has the capacity to use partitons larger than 2gig and will make use of the 32bit format.

It is somewhat like calling an Auto parts store and saying " I have a FORD " The first question you will be asked is " Which Model ? " And if you say " I THINK it is so & so " you may well wind up with the wrong part.

The same goes for 98. Original 98, Original 98 with the CSP 1 added or 98 SE. Every one of them is different. And with SE we done got the 3rd version thrown in. That dumb usless $20 UPDATE version.

Or just to add more confusion yet. Do you have an OEM version of Windows ?

    So the botom line being.

It makes life a whole lot easier for everybody if we know which DOS and/or which version of Windows we are dealing with. Again every one is different.

I won't get into the issue of IE as I never removed anything when re-installing 95 or 98. Other than removing or at least disabling AV and any Norton stuff that might be loading.
