    That exhausts the resources for a specific repair. Now that you have executables running again and the system is somewhat usable, do some normal maintenance. Run sfc /scannow - Run Disk Cleanup - Run Error Checking. Then try System Restore and see if you can return to a date prior to this problem. Run a full disk AV search using the latest signatures. Do an online AV scan as well. Check for Spyware and Adware using AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Run HiJackThis and post a log here for review if you feel that something doesn't look right.

    If none of that helps, do a Repair Install of XP. That assumes you have a full version CD. If not, you'll have to backup your important files to separate media and do the Restore function that your OEM provides.

    If you did all the things I suggested and still no relief, then I'd think the Repair install would be next. It requires that you have a full install CD for XP. Check the link below for a concise outline of the procedure:

    You can try these commands first though just to be sure=

    assoc.txt=txtfile

    assoc.dll=dllfile

    Perhaps you'll have to type the link in directly or copy/paste it. It is a valid link and works for me. If you're other associations are hosed, the hyperlinks probably are too.
