Martin - I just plain missed the new post. Turns out the forum will un-flag new stuff after you've been on and moving around for a good while and there were 4 network issues that had me spending lots of research time on each of them so I doodled around in networking for around 3-4 hours. Since I always do the forum from bottom up, XP follows networking.

If the warnings were on my PC/Server, I would just ignore them. Some things just aren't worth trying to fix and since these aren't causing problems, I'd say they fall square into that category.

    Martin, we love you.
If it weren't for you and Catastrophe, we would be bored out of our minds telling people how to disable a firewall or find a lost toolbar. Your problems are a little more, shall we say...complex?

It is time to reinstall XP, Martin.

Do all your back ups. Take screencaps, take note of settings and what IS working, print lists, run a Belarc so you don't forget any software that you like. Then set BIOS to boot from cd. Disconnect from the internet. Clear CMOS just for the hell of it. Do a complete format (not the quickie!) on all the partitions.

Picture this as the garage with years of clutter, and you can't even drive your car in there anymore. You are going to haul everthing into he front yard, and decide if it goes back, and if so, where you prefer to keep it. meanwhile, while you are in the yard sorting, your wife is cleaning the cobwebs and bleaching the floor...

If you can't bear the thought of a reinstall (and trust me, it's easy...I do it alot...) you are going to keep trying to clean up messes, and in the process, interfere with other stuff. You are retired- you should be fishing (Newt would probably be a good source for info, there) or at least using your computer, instead of chasing down obscure errors. And since you won't quit looking in the event viewer... Have you talked to your Doc about medicines for OCD? :D Tell the truth, you have been staring at the moving blue bar on the XP splash screen, haven't you?

I'm concerned that Catastropy looked up its name in the dictionary and started to get angry. Then you said bad words to it, didn't you? Dave egged you on and said to wave the XP disk at it with threats. It found out the other computers had nice names, and the dog was Fido and the cat, Fluffy. Did you ever read the Sephen King book "Christine" about the angry car? This time, give it a nice name, like "Martin's Toy" or "Special" (Computers don't understand sarcasm yet!) and sneak the XP cd into the room, maybe while it's off. You can do it, Martin. It is a lot easier than that hypothetical garage- just clear your schedule, have some coffee, and take the plunge. When you are done, you will have a happy and clean computer that won't even remember the character defamation.

(Abraxas, please write Martin a VBS script to disable his event viewers??)
