No, because (1) I have a NAT router and (2) you cannot get a virus just by being connected to the internet.

There are a couple of vulnerabilities in Windows that once patched (updated) will render the system secure from some threats, like Code Red and others.

But the bottom line is that one cannot get a virus just by being connected, the virus must be executed by the user.

And no. the www is not tha scary, it's the media and security websites, and misinformed users who promote the idea of the www being insecure and dangerous. Why? Because this is an old marketing trick: Make the environment appear more dangerous than it really is and people will pay more money to feel secure. Just like the so called fuel shortages that result in higher prices for fuel, these www myths are not based upon truth.

    Tony,

While I know that having a hardware firewall is good protection, will it keep you from being infected by an infected ISP? We've also seen multiple instances of people with clean installs of pre-SP1 XP, get infected by the Blaster worm within seconds, just connecting and going to Windows Update. Would having a router prevent this too?

    Hi Martin,

How goes the Battle? Though it won't help you now, you might consider using a program like Total Uninstall in the future. I tested it with a few programs as well as some other monitoring apps. Sweet! I also downloaded a trial of configsafe to try it out with that, more just to see what all that app changes, but upon installing got a message the trial period was over. What little change was made amounted to about 450 new registry entries, equal amount deleted and near 50 modified, as well as some new and modified files. System restore would not reset most of the entries since it records a limited amount of the registry. This app rolled back all of them. :)

Yes, because the router only allows solicited info to pass through to the computer. If I do not ask for it, it can'r get through.
ISPs do not get infected, perhaps you meant to say it differently. The ISP only can do certain things to protect the subscriber network, like disable certain ports that known expoilts use, or disallow certain filetypes in email attachments. Otherv than that, they just let data pass through.

Hey Dave: Been gone a couple of days, took the kids to 6 Flags, watched them and wife ride roller coasters, too risky for my blood. Especially those ones that whip you around upside down. Phew, I don't know how they can do that without puking.

I downloaded the uninstall program, too bad I did not have it running when I installed that Configsafe program. So thanks for that.

The battle is at a standstill, haven't done anything, still have the delay.

If that program hadn't crashed this machine on install, w/o it having been run, I'd reinstall and then use total uninstall, see if that would work. But, the machine crashed during the install so I'd just as soon not go through that again. Besides, if Configsafe crashed during installation, the Total Uninstall program might not be able to save the changes. Unless you have an idea on how to reverse the 450 new entries with the program already gone?

'Nother problem. Windowsbbs tabs: top of post, "edit" "email" "buddy" etc not loading on my browser, have to refresh two or three times to see them all, otherwise little window there, nothing inside. Same with "search" magnifying glass next to member name. Not there when page first loads.

    This me or site?

To state that I find computers hard to understand would be an understatement in the extreme.

    1. For unknown reasons, the windowsbbs site is now displaying all tabs w/o a problem.

    2. the delay in startup between the splash screen and "loading your personal settings" has reduced itself to 12 seconds from the 65-75 seconds of Tuesday, Wenesday and Thrusday morning.

This has occured without my doing anything other than unplugging everything while I went out of town for two days.

This board needs an Icon for "Puzzeled" in addition to the one for confused.

Machine, contrary to popular belief has a mind of it's own, as it is able to exhibit diabolical behavior, evidenced by its malice of forethougt.

I really believe it behaves this way just to ensure that Johanna has something to nag me about.:D
