Those are private addresses. It doesnt matter if you put it up on a billboard out in front of your house.
They are non routable addresses on the internet.

If it starts with a 192. or a 10. you can post it all you want.

Any of those switches will work.
I like to stick with Netgear or Dlink but that's just me.

Hi James, I've been intrigued by your Post. I have a Thompson Wireless Modem V7 Model: TH-TG585V7 supplied by Telecom NZ which is ADSL2 capable. It has 4 Ethernet connectors - embedded firewall and I have 5 computers currently able to surf the web.
I have an Excel 4 connector ethernet switch which allows me to connect a total of 7 computers to the Internet at once.
I also have a USB 2.0 Host link which enables me to transfer files an data between two computers. Link:http://www.digitus.info/pt/productos/accessories/?c=1216&p=3597
Total cost of this equipment was less than $200.00NZD.
This was a simple hook up that an old fuddy duddy like me was able to work out. I'm throwing this in as food for thought. Cheers Neil.:D

ps. My laptop runs with wireless Lan PCMCIA adapter through the same Thompson Modem.;)

Just my .02; you might get better internet performance by using OpenDNS servers @208.67.222.222 primary, and 208.67.220.220 secondary as opposed to the Bell South servers you list above

Thanks, I ordered the Dlink for 19.99.

I guess I'll have to roundup a cable here somewhere. Maybe the local mom & pop computer repair store has a few used ones in stock.

Many thanks for your help, too!

Thanks, retired. I'll have a lot to learn about networking.

    I'll study up on this.

Is that listed under Connection Configuration in the Expert mode?

All I see now is (Primary) 0.0.0.0 and (Secondary) 0.0.0.0

    James,
I wish you were closer. I throw away patch cords I have so many. :D

I just shake my head when I walk in places like Best Buy and they get 13 bucks for a patch cord. I pay 99 cents for 3' patch cords with boots.

I learned a long time ago to look for used parts in good condition, or check with nearest mom & pop computer store for screws, IDE cables, etc.

I have a friend who paid about 40.00 for a USB printer cable (not recently), after I found a multi-pack for 6.00 at Sam's Club. Needless to say, he returned the Best Buy cable.

Rose's discount store has some computer cables made by Philips. I bought a USB extension cord there for only 3.00. I had previously purchased a similar unbranded cord at Dollar Tree, but the transfer rates were poor.

Sorry, I don't fully understand what you are saying, much less how to do it.

Ok, my Dlink switch came in today, so after I hooked up everything I figured out how to change servers. Not sure if it made much of a difference, but the download speeds at PC Pitstop were a tad higher.

Networking these two computers together is harder than I thought it would be. I'm still searching for a clear cut tutorial to walk me through it.

Thanks retired. I stumbled upon that site just before you responded.

Out of confusion I created two different network (groups?). One on my PC, and one on the second PC.

I can see both work groups on each computer, but I am getting access denied errors on each machine. How can I remove / delete these groups and start over?

    Thanks again retired. :)

I managed to fix the unwanted network group issues for now, and after adding a couple of trusted zones to Zone Alarm I am now able to access shared files and folders in both PCs. :D Still, I would like to access more than just those folders.

How does mapping a network drive play into this? Am I supposed to use this feature to access a partition, or do I just grant access rights to the same?

On any computer, right click a folder and select Sharing Tab. You can share any directory you want. By default the only folders that get shared are the Shared Documents folders.

    Right.

Seems simple enough, but I am intrigued about mapping a drive (or folder I guess). I hope to find some interesting articles on the subject.

Mapping a drive is simple having a network share "appear" as a drive in My Computer. You have a C:\ and each mapped drive shows up as successive drive letters.

At first I was going to use the wizard setting to *not* share folders & printers, and then I was going to find certain folders and share them by changing their properties...however, I was warned that going this route might jeopardize my computer's security.

Why the warning? If I am going to share folders, should I use the wizard for this, or does it matter?

    ***bump***

I have marked this thread as resolved, but if anyone wants to answer my last question then that's fine.

    Many thanks to all!
