    Ralph ...

OK, it's time for radical surgery, and I think this may be my last suggestion.
    1. Uninstall Firefox. Before you do, make sure you have a copy of FF 1.5.0.7 and Java JRE 1.5 revision9.

    2. Run RegSeeker; search for firefox and any nicknames you may have used for shortcuts. Delete all references.

    3. Do the same for java.

    4. Reinstall Firefox; use the Custom installation, rather than the Standard. It gives you more control over what's installed, and where. Do not let the installation program open FF.

    5. Before you run FF, open its Profile Manager ... Start > Run type firefox -p. (As suggested in a previous post, you may have to use firefox.exe or <path to> firefox.exe.) Create a new profile, with a name different from your usual profile.

    6. Install the Java download.

    7. Open FF, go to netscape.com and click on "My Netscape ".
If this solves the problem, we'll try copying certain files (bookmarks.html, etc.) from your old profile. If this doesn't take care of the problem, I'm all out of ideas. I'll keep my fingers crossed. :)

    Radical !!

    Jim
    Good news !!
I did all the remove and reinstall you listed.

MyNetscape works with the new profile and does NOT work with the old.

I had to copy my old bookmarks file over to the new profile to get back here. I could not figure out how to switch between profiles. When I go to firefox -p, it just opens the new profile, I do not get the selection page that I got the first time.

Do I have to re-download all the themes, etc.??
How do I get back to where I was before this??

    Whew! At least something worked!

I don't know where you were before this. :)

Seriously, I use only the default theme, but I use numerous extensions. So, one thing at a time.

You've already got your bookmarks copied to the new profile, so now copy the Extensions folder, as well as the three extension files (.cache, .ini, and .rdf) and any other files that seem related to any of your extensions from the old profile, and see if your extensions work properly. Same for themes.

"My Netscape" shouldn't be affected by either extensions or themes, as you had the problem when you opened your previous FF installation in Safe Mode, which doesn't use either extensions or themes ... it's plain vanilla FF.

If all is well, copy the 51582485.s (the number may be different on your system) and key3.db files if you have saved passwords.

That should put you back in business, for the most part. I have to leave shortly, and won't be back until tomorrow morning, so I'll count on Ramona to list any other files you should copy.

The important thing is do things one step at a time, rather than several things all at once. That way, if "My Netscape" won't open at any point, it's related to your last step. Good luck ... I'll check back tomorrow.

    Its Over

    Jim

Looks like the trouble maker had something to do with files in the EXTENSIONS folder in profile folder.
My old profile had five or six sub folders within the EXTENSIONS folder. I copied them all together into the new profile and the mynetscape stopped working. I found one that had a date earlier this week and took it out. Mynetscape worked again.

When looking at the file names in the problem folder, it appears it has to do with something called 'noscript' since that shows up in some of the file names.

    Anyway, all is well now.
Many thanks for your time and efforts to solve this for me.

    Hi Ralph,

You're welcome. I'm glad you found the source of the problem, and that I was able to help.

More often than not, when you run into such a problem with FF, it's because of a recently installed extension or theme. My first suggestion should have been starting there, except that we got hung up on the Java issue.

When I suggested trying Safe Mode, which disables installed extensions and themes, the problem continued. Apparently, just disabling them wasn't enough to prevent the problem from recurring ... it required uninstalling the extension (or at least removing its subfolder, which apparently accomplished the same thing).

FWIW, I currently use 19 extensions with FF 1.5.0.7, and never have run into such a problem (that I know of).

If you don't already use it, let me suggest installing the MR Tech Local Install extension. Its name really doesn't do it justice, as it's actually more of an extension manager and, IMHO, should be the first extension that anyone installs.

Local Install's interface is rather intimidating, so see this post for the settings I think are important for the average user.

Again, I'm glad the problem has been solved, and thanks for being so patient about all the hoops I made you jump through. :)
