newbie to the forum and not very pc savvy.

Running XP home 32 bit and after I did a systems restore today I downloaded MicroSoft Essentials. It downloaded properly and initiated a scan. During the scan I was notified by a bubble that I didn't have an a/v software and at then end of the scan MSE directed me to click on a red rectangle to turn on real time protection.

I did so but it failed w/ the above error code. Searched and found that there is some kind of conflict w/ MS Defender but I cannot find Defender to turn it off. It doesn't appear under 'all programs' and it doesn't appear in add/remove programs.

    Help?

    Thanks,

    John

Hi John, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Since you are running Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials they are conflicting with each other and you need to remove Windows Defender completely in order to turn on real time protection in Microsoft Security Essentials.

Since Windows Defender isn't in Add/Remove Programs, download and run the portable version of Revo Uninstaller. (The download link is at the bottom of the download page)

After you have extracted the contents of the folder run the revouninstaller.exe file. Once the program opens highlight Windows Defender and click uninstall.

Reboot the computer after the uninstallation finishes.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Note: A common error is to forget to show your System Details in your profile:

Make sure to do the above when entering your System Details, thanks.
